Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Shores.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started with a passion and background in food as a chef to help change the way people are able to access healthy food here in Denver. I am the currently the Executive Director of SAME Café Denver, an innovative participation-based restaurant providing everyone access to healthy food in a community setting where people can be nourished with dignity while contributing what they can — time, money, or produce — to the operation of the Café. This unique approach to food justice has positioned SAME as a national model for solutions to food insecurity. I am also a board member for EAT Denver, a nonprofit membership organization that connects and empowers our regional independent food and beverage community. This opportunity helps keep me connected to local food systems and the chef community in the Denver metro area
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The most challenging thing for me was taking the leap from running kitchens in the for profit world to a teaching kitchen in the non profit world. It was the hardest yet best choice I made for myself. I have been lucky to call the non profit world my home for 10 years now and can not imagine ebing anywhere else in life right now!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
SAME Cafè/So All May Eat is the longest running participation based café in the US. We are celebrating 18 years in October. We are best known for being a restaurant that creates community through healthy food access. Most of our guests eat here everyday and say the food and atmosphere is what keeps them coming back. Guests are able to participate how they can for their meal by donating 30 minutes of volunteer time, paying what they can or bringing in produce from a local farm or garden in exchange for a healthy lunch. At SAME our menu changes everyday based on the produce that is being donated.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We are always looking for new partners in varying fields to collaborate with. Visit our website to learn more at soallmayeat.org/denver or email me directly at carrie@samecafedenver.org to learn more how you can support SAME Cafè
