Hidden Gems: Meet Desiree Townsend of Yay! Gifts and Cards, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Townsend.

Desiree Townsend

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
During the 2020 pandemic, my husband and I, like many others, found ourselves searching for a creative outlet while in lockdown. What started as a simple need to stay busy at home soon sparked a creative journey. While my husband experimented with turning pens on a lathe and my daughter crafted keychains and decorated cups, I initially tried my hand at chalk-based home decor. Our house, bustling with different crafts, was alive with the energy of creation, laying the groundwork for something more.

The turning point came when I saw a friend in my old blogging community using a laser for crafting. Intrigued by the technology and the possibilities it offered, I decided to pivot my focus. Despite having no prior experience with laser engraving, I took a leap and founded what is now known as Yay! Gifts and Cards. We started small, our first products mostly consisting of simple laser-engraved ornaments and cutting boards, but the response was encouraging.

In 2025, the transition from a home-based operation to a dedicated commercial space marked a major milestone for me and my small, woman-owned business. Today, Yay! Gifts and Cards specializes in personalized gifts, curated cards from Colorado small businesses, and on-site engraving for events, all built upon the foundation of that initial creative spark I found during a challenging global situation.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a perfectly smooth road — but every bump has shaped the business in the best way.

Like many small business owners, I’ve had seasons when I questioned myself, felt stretched thin, and had to figure things out as I went—starting Yay! Gifts & Cards meant learning an entirely new industry, investing in equipment, and navigating all the trial-and-error that comes with this type of work.

One challenge was simply capacity. I’m a one-person show, and in the beginning, I tried to do everything myself while still being a wife, a mom, and an involved community member. I had to learn to build systems, set boundaries, and trust my own process.

Another struggle was confidence. Switching careers after a long stretch in digital marketing felt like starting over. But each project, each returning customer, and each “this made their whole day” moment reminded me why I chose this.

And honestly, I think the biggest challenge has been balancing creativity with running the business side: pricing correctly, saying no when needed, and learning to value my own time and expertise.

But those challenges forced me to grow. They pushed me to be more intentional, more efficient, and more connected to the people I serve. And I’m better for it — both as a business owner and as a human.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Yay! Gifts & Cards is built on one simple belief: thoughtful gifting strengthens relationships.

I run a personalized gifting studio in Centennial where I help medium-to-large businesses, nonprofit organizations, event planners, and everyday humans turn ordinary items into meaningful moments. My work blends creativity, craftsmanship, and connection — and it’s designed to make people feel genuinely seen and appreciated.

What I do:

I specialize in personalized gifts that are both elevated and accessible. My most popular items include engraved tumblers, notebooks, card holders, desk nameplates, charcuterie boards, ornaments, coasters, keychains, and curated gift sets. I also create custom corporate gifting solutions that take the stress off busy teams — they send me the list of recipients, and I handle everything from personalization to packaging.

What I’m known for:

People come to me for gifts that feel personal, intentional, and beautifully done. Whether it’s bulk onboarding gifts for a company, thoughtful appreciation gifts for a team, or closing gifts for real estate professionals, everything is curated with care. I’m also known for my warm customer experience. I make the process easy, collaborative, and fun.

What sets me apart:

On-site engraving! I bring my equipment to weddings, corporate events, grand openings, and private parties to create live personalization experiences. Watching someone receive a gift that’s engraved for them on the spot creates a moment of surprise and delight you simply can’t get from mass-produced gifts.

Relationship-first gifting philosophy! My work isn’t about buying “stuff.” It’s about connection, gratitude, and celebrating people. I help clients choose gifts that carry meaning, not just their logo.

High-touch service! I handle everything from product sourcing to design to packaging, which keeps it hands-off for busy professionals who still want their gifting to shine.

A curated aesthetic! Clean, modern, elevated, and timeless. Every piece feels gift-ready.

What I’m most proud of brand-wise:

I’m proud that Yay! Gifts & Cards has become known for quality, warmth, and genuine heart. Clients consistently tell me that my gifts make their teams feel appreciated, their customers feel valued, and their events feel special. I’m proud that my brand has a personality that’s joyful, thoughtful, and rooted in real human connection.

What I want readers to know:

If you’re looking for gifts that feel personal without adding more work to your plate, I’m your person. Whether you need 10 gifts or 150, whether you want something engraved on-site at your event or delivered beautifully packaged to your office, I create meaningful, memorable experiences from start to finish.

Yay! Gifts & Cards isn’t about transactions — it’s about relationships. And I love helping people celebrate the ones that matter most.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that surprises people is how much music is woven into who I am and how it influences my business.

Long before I started Yay! Gifts & Cards, I spent time singing with Sweet Adelines, surrounded by harmony, choreography, and a sisterhood of women who showed up for each other with joy and intention. That experience taught me the power of small details — how one perfectly tuned note can change the entire chord, and how individual voices can create something unforgettable when they come together.

Even though life pulled me away from it for a decade, I recently found my way back through pop-up singing. Have you seen this? They are magical one-night gatherings where strangers become a choir, no prep required. It reminded me how good it feels to create beauty in the moment… and how much joy there is in connection.

And honestly? That’s exactly what my brand is built on.

Yay! Gifts & Cards is my version of harmony in gift form.

Every engraved piece, every curated gift set, every live event, it’s all about creating small, intentional moments that make people feel seen. Just like music, gifting is emotional. It’s a way of saying, “You matter,” without needing a lot of words.

What I do in my studio isn’t so different from what happens when voices blend:

I take simple elements and turn them into something meaningful. I create moments of joy that people remember. I help bring people together.

So while you may know me as the “personalized gifting person,” there’s a singer and harmony-lover behind the scenes! Someone who believes deeply in the beauty of connection, whether it’s through music or a perfectly chosen gift.

Both light me up. Both feel like home.
