Hidden Gems: Meet Jake Shannon of No1 Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Shannon.

Hi Jake, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I felt empty, stuck, and frankly, I felt defeated. It was 2006, I was in my early 30s. On paper everything looked great; high 6-figure salary, prestigious graduate degree, fancy bachelor’s pad overlooking the Pacific ocean, a gorgeous wife that loved me, etc., but inside I was miserable. I felt like every day I went into that corporate office a little more of my soul was being sucked out of my body.

Then I had my “f*ck it” moment. I’d had enough. I quit. I made the decision to become my own boss! I committed fully to surviving by my wits. Sure, it was scary as hell but I was 100% committed. Sink or swim. But guess what? Not only did I survive, I thrived! It wasn’t easy, no, but now I’ve spent nearly two decades as a proven, successful entrepreneur building my legacy!

Years spent of deliberate effort (and hundreds of thousands of dollars) learning how to earn with the very best info and grueling trial and error have given me something nothing else, could; FREEDOM AND SELF-RESPECT.

I believe that everyone should be able to turn their passion into a profession. Unfortunately, for small business owners and new entrepreneurs, there are very few rules, and even fewer successes (2/3 of small businesses fail within five years). Real success requires the right mix of creativity, analytical ability, hard-earned confidence, and massive amounts of action.

So if you don’t want a boss, then YOU have to be the boss. You need to make a commitment and surround yourself with the right people. Elite athletes have long known that masterful coaching is key to success in both sports and the same goes with any performance-based endeavor. That’s why I’ve made my career about coaching; it’s my mission to help liberate people by monetizing their passions into a full-fledged profession/business.

I’ve traveled the world coaching people in both grapplings (specifically my expertise is catch-as-catch-can wrestling) and in business development for more than a decade now… Along the way I’ve become a best-selling author, founded and scaled data and software start-ups into $million+ created the modern Fitness Mace movement via my Macebell.com invention revivified a dying sport through ScientificWrestling.com, earned my Master of Science in Financial Engineering, worked professionally as a statistician, talk-radio jock, and professional wrestler.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t always been smooth, I’ve been an entrepreneur now through three different global financial crises. I cut my teeth during the collapse of the dot com bubble in 2001, rebounded exponentially after the Great Recession of 2009, and most recently massively scaled after the Lockdown debacle of 2020. Each one has been pretty brutal and required 10X more effort and creativity than most people realize.

In addition, I’ve endeavored to be a great friend, and an amazing husband and father. Keeping this many plates spinning is not a 9 – 5 job, it’s more like 5am to 9pm, but when you’re in love with your life it is not hard, it’s awesome!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Denver is a fantastic city full of driven, smart, and fit people. I really love that. I was born here and to see the evolution from when I first left to move to California back in 1995 compared with today is truly mind-boggling. The only thing I don’t like is the weather during the winter.
