Hidden Gems: Meet Jamee Leichtle of Rose From Concrete Counseling & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamee Leichtle.

Hi Jamee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.

Grateful to be here! Thank you so much for having me.

I could have never imagined that I would be who and where I am today. My path to becoming a professional mental health provider has been anything but ordinary.

I was born and raised in Denver. I come from a closely connected family full of love, which has shaped me into the energetic, ambitious and free-spirited person that I am. My parents have been happily married for many years, and I have two older sisters who continue to have a significant role in my life and my heart. From a young age, I gravitated toward sports, particularly basketball. Playing ball felt natural and free like I was always meant for it. I found a sense of identity, belonging, and accomplishment playing competitive sports.

I think it was during this time I was able to instill a strong work ethic, leadership skills, resilience, teamwork and an inextinguishable passion that I carry with me today. The only dream I had ever known was to play college basketball, which I was fortunate to do momentarily. Ultimately, my journey as an athlete ended due to two consecutive career-ending knee injuries that were sudden and unexpected. I was devastated. I never fathomed a life outside of sports. It was a discouraging time in my life as I began to wonder if anything would ever capture my heart the way basketball did.

Aside from sports, I became fascinated with the complexity of human beings. I studied Psychology and Philosophy during my time as an undergrad student and allowed my curiosity for life, and for people, to lead the way as I immersed myself in the content. There was never a career plan in place, however, the qualities that were instilled in me through competitive sports helped me excel academically. Also, a big truth about me is my love for adventure! I feel most authentic when I am exploring uncharted territory, discovering new things, and somehow helping create positive change. This led to my interest in psych research during this time.

During the final semester of undergrad school, and as I was finishing up a research internship, my life completely changed. My oldest sister, who was also my best friend, had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. I had lost a ‘one-in-a-million’ type of love that meant absolutely everything to me – my world was forever altered. Gratefully, with the unwavering love and care from family, friends, and unexpected human angels, I finished the semester and earned my degree, in honor of my beautiful sister.

The following several years were difficult, as I faced some mental health and relational challenges that were foreign to me. One day, while absentmindedly searching the web, I came across a counseling graduate program located in the heart of the neighborhood I was raised in. I like to think fate played a part in me eventually finding my way into this program … and I didn’t realize this at the time, but grad school became the ultimate catalyst to my journey to healing. It was comforting to be able to access my sports-given qualities and channel my love for learning, while navigating heartbreak. It required me to get honest with myself and gave me the space to deeply feel, reflect, unlearn, and relearn. It equipped me with incredible knowledge and new skill sets and opened my eyes to new perspectives. The process was strenuous, and I definitely had taken some necessary breaks along the way! With time though, I began to attain a deeper understanding and acceptance of myself and my life experiences. In many ways, this time frame re-lit the fire within me.

Upon entering grad school, I didn’t intend, desire or envision myself becoming a professional counselor. My journey through the program was never about pursuing a career path I felt confident about or attaining fancy credentials. I actually questioned whether I was on the right path many times. That confusion diminished as I was given an opportunity, as an intern, to counsel some incredible women facing unimaginable hardship. My time working with these clients deeply inspired (and continue to inspire) my growth as a clinician in more ways than one. Eventually, I wrapped up my work as a grad student with this profound, unavoidable awareness of the pain and suffering that exists in the world. I couldn’t unknow it andI wanted to do something – anything – about it.

Fast-forward to the present day, and with several thousand hours of clinical work completed, I continue to find purpose and passion in helping people heal from trauma, unexpected loss, heartbreak, relational challenges and more. My venture toward licensure and private practice owning has been timely, but also SO much fun and full of just, life. I am eternally grateful to have had opportunities to work in various settings, counseling people from many walks of life, suffering from a wide range of mental health concerns. I continue to treasure my time spent with clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

My journey has been challenging, colorful, and unpredictable. I’ve encountered twists and turns, some dead ends, and many beautiful surprises along the way. It’s been a road filled with deep sadness, as well as profound joy, gratitude, excitement, and hope. Through the process, I’ve learned to welcome transformation, as uncomfortable as it can be, and have fully embraced that healing is a lifelong voyage. I am eternally grateful for this road and the obstacles I’ve encountered along the way, as it has given me the ability to genuinely connect with people, provide unconditional support, share wisdom, and help instill hope.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?

When I think of Denver, I immediately think of family.  That is what I love the most about this city – that it is my true home, where the people I love reside. My family has many generations of history in Denver, and so do our friends. I’ve always known Denver to be full of culture, celebration, and connection, and I am grateful to have been raised in such a soulful community.

My least favorite thing about Denver is the unaffordable housing costs that have uprooted and displaced many Denver natives out of their beloved neighborhoods, and for some, into a state of survival.
