Hidden Gems: Meet Jay Boykin of Jay Boykin LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Boykin.

Hi Jay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always believed that life gives us multiple chapters, and we’re never too old to write a new one. I started my professional journey in corporate finance, primarily working for publicly traded companies. I spent decades helping large organizations make sense of their numbers, build strategies, and lead with purpose. I held senior leadership roles, sat at executive tables, and helped others grow, but deep down, I knew there was more I was meant to do.

What I didn’t expect was that “more” would manifest in the form of entrepreneurship, at nearly 60 years old. After parting ways with a company I’d worked for 14 years, it was time for my next chapter.

Starting my own business wasn’t part of some grand plan. It was born out of reflection, a desire for impact, and the quiet question that kept surfacing: What if I bet on myself? I launched my consulting firm, focusing on fractional CFO services for small businesses, particularly those that are purpose-driven and often overlooked by traditional finance experts. I also built a platform called Just Human, which explores what it means to lead, live, and love authentically.

The road hasn’t been easy. Starting over later in life meant battling self-doubt, learning to trust my instincts again, and leaning into resilience I didn’t always know I had. But I’ve come to believe that belief — in yourself, in your vision, in your ability to reinvent — is the most critical currency we’ve.

Now, I get to help entrepreneurs understand their financial story, find clarity in the chaos, and grow businesses with heart. And through my podcast, speaking, and coaching, I get to remind people that it’s never too late to start something that matters.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not even close to a smooth road, but I’ve learned that growth happens in places of discomfort.

One of the biggest struggles for me, hands down, has been imposter syndrome. Even with years of experience and a solid track record in corporate finance, stepping out on my own brought a whole new wave of doubt. When you’re used to operating inside an organization with a title, a team, and a system, it can be jarring to be the one building all of that from scratch suddenly.

There were moments when I questioned everything: Who am I to do this? Will anyone take me seriously? Is it too late to start over? I’d be coaching business owners on their financial strategy by day, and then lying awake at night wondering if I was doing enough to build my own business.

Imposter syndrome doesn’t care how experienced or accomplished you are. It shows up when you’re doing something bold and unfamiliar. But what I’ve discovered is that the key isn’t waiting for the doubt to disappear. It’s moving forward despite it. You have to learn to trust your wisdom, lean on your values, and remember that courage isn’t the absence of fear, it’s the decision that something else matters more.

That mindset has made all the difference. I’m building a business I’m proud of, but more importantly, I’ve rebuilt belief in myself. And every time I help a client gain clarity, confidence, or peace of mind, it reminds me exactly why I started.

As you know, we’re big fans of Jay Boykin LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is Jay Boykin, LLC, but my service is called Aligned Impact. At its core, it’s about helping small business owners grow with clarity, confidence, and purpose.

I provide Fractional CFO services, which is about strategic financial support for founders who want more than a bookkeeper but don’t need (or can’t afford) a full-time CFO. I help them understand their numbers, improve profitability, manage cash flow, and plan for growth. Sometimes it’s a short-term engagement to tackle a specific challenge, like pricing or forecasting. At other times, I serve as an ongoing thought partner, working alongside founders on a month-to-month basis. Either way, it’s always customized. No two businesses or business owners are alike, and I honor that.

What sets me apart is something I call the Just Human approach. It’s the belief that business, like life is deeply personal. Every founder has a story, and every financial decision has emotional weight behind it. I combine deep financial expertise with emotional intelligence, empathy, and tools like Insights Discovery, a personality assessment that helps teams communicate more effectively and lead with self-awareness. Whether I’m working one-on-one or with a small team, I help clients not just grow their numbers, but grow as leaders.

I also host a podcast called Just Human, where I explore what it means to live, lead, and love with more intention and connection. It’s a space for honest conversations about various topics,

I’m most proud that my brand reflects both expertise and empathy. It’s not just about financial strategy — it’s about building something meaningful. I want readers to know this: You can make a business that works for you, not just one that looks good on paper. And you don’t have to do it alone. Aligned Impact exists to help you align your business decisions with your values and create lasting impact.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I am a nerd for various apps! Of course I use Excel and Google Sheets as a finance professional. I use Motion AI for my calendar and task management, Super Human for email. I enjoy Brene Brown and her Dare to Lead, and Unlocking Us podcasts.

As far as books, I love to read and grow. Two of my favorite recent authors are Oliver Burkeman, who wrote 4000 Weeks: Time Management for Mortals. I also love the inspiration of Kobi Yamada. He writes books that appear to be for children, but they are very powerful, with messages for all of us!
