Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Meyer.
Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always been fascinated by psychology! When I was going through a divorce and my kids were young, I began seeing a great counselor who helped me a lot–so much so that I decided to start my master’s program to become a counselor myself. My own experiences, both personally and professionally, have informed my caring, understanding approach.
I have experienced many of the same things my clients have, so I “get it” and I also know how to work through those experiences from a personal and clinical approach. I have worked as a clinical supervisor in a group counseling company, have worked in corporate America outside the therapy world, and have worked with clients of so many different backgrounds and challenges.
I opened my private practice in the summer of 2019 and then moved office locations in the fall of 2022. Now I work with adult individuals, couples, and groups.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, at least personally.
I have gone through significant marital challenges, the loss of stepchildren, have moved three times, had early struggles with supporting my children financially, and have dealt with blended-family issues, all while providing counseling and running a successful business. I have learned a lot along the way and have become stronger as a result of learning what NOT to do.
As you know, we’re big fans of Jennifer Meyer Counseling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I own a private practice in Fort Collins and am the sole practitioner. I provide individual, couples, and group counseling to adults. I love helping clients through life transitions and difficulties such as relationship challenges, divorce, sexual concerns, menopause, midlife crisis, and retirement.
I am also experienced in helping individuals recognize principles of abuse and control in settings such as religion, abusive relationships, and toxic work environments, and in how to combat these tactics and recover from them.
I have written and contributed to articles for several publications and websites, including “Counseling Today,” a publication of the American Counseling Association, the websites www.deepsoulfullove.com, www.insidehook.com, and Giddy – The Authority on Sexual Health (getmegiddy.com). I have been interviewed about my practice and approach by different individuals and organizations for podcasts and videos about topics such as divorce, bullying, child abuse, affair recovery, hypervigilance, seasonal affective disorder, and holiday grief.
I work to give back to the community in ways that speak to me personally. I am a regular (volunteer) presenter for Second Saturday Divorce Workshops for Women, presenting on the emotional and family aspects of divorce along with a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst, an attorney, and a mortgage expert.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that Fort Collins is a university town where we are always exposed to young, curious minds and can attend athletic events. I love the feeling of Old Town and its charm, particularly during the holidays.
We have incredible restaurants to choose from, and as a foodie, that’s important to me! I also love the easy access to many hiking and outdoor areas. The only thing I dislike about Fort Collins is the increasing traffic.
