Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimbo Lord.
Hi Jimbo, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The Jimbo & Jules story really starts long before the business began.
At age 14, I sustained four concussions within one year from football and ski racing. I spent a better part of that year in a dark room or with polarized sunglasses on in the classroom. Every specialist under the sun told me that my symptoms could be permanent, so I took my health into my own hands. During my search for a natural remedy, my brother Mason recommended I try CBD. Mason had been in a life-threatening car accident a few years prior and had used cannabis to help with his pain management. I loved to use cannabis recreationally before the head injuries but afterward, something changed – I began to get anxious and focus more on the pain rather than getting relief from it. The non-psychoactive element of CBD was really appealing to me so I decided to give it a shot.
Within weeks of taking a high-strength CBD tincture, I noticed positive changes; the chronic headaches subsided, the brain fog began to lift, and the sunglasses came off. The reverence I had for the cannabis plant grew greatly and it became part of my daily life.
Seven years later, I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease. Once again, I tried the conventional medical route with little progress. Serendipitously, I met a friend that had experience treating Lyme with Bee Venom Therapy. After doing my own research, I decided to dive in. I stung myself with 30 Honeybees a week for a little over a year and was cured.
While enduring the mental and physical pain of healing from Lyme, my friend, and now business partner, Jules and I began combining full spectrum CBD and other therapeutic botanicals to bring relief. We crafted salves to apply to the sting sites and tinctures to help with the systemic inflammation and anxiety caused by Lyme. Once again CBD had a profound effect on my well-being.
As the prospect of starting a legitimate business grew, we were faced with a reckoning that doing so would inevitably create waste — and that was in direct conflict with our deep love for the planet. With this in mind, we decided to create a business model that we coined “Planet-First”. Planet-First means that every decision is made prioritizing the planet. Prioritizing the planet makes it easy to serve our customers with the highest quality, natural ingredients, and through our own research, we have found that the better quality the ingredient, the higher its therapeutic benefit. It’s a win-win for our customers and the planet.
Our mission at Jimbo & Jules is to build the bridge between personal wellness and the wellness of our planet. We’ve experienced firsthand that when you feel better you’re able to do better for yourself, your community, and the planet.
I’m grateful every day that the health challenges I have faced guided me to help others that may also be dealing with chronic pain and illness!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road is rarely smooth, but let’s just say we have learned to dance whereas we used to claw our way through! All jokes aside, nothing could have prepared me for some of the challenges of starting a business.
We started out by making all of our products in Jules’ parent’s basement in Laurel, Maryland. After graduating college we pretty much invested our collective life savings into our first large ingredient and packaging order. I’ll never forget when the first batch of metal tins arrived for our salves. We already had a few mom-and-pop shops that pre-ordered products and we were so excited to begin making them. Before even inspecting the tins we just started making salves and filling them up until 3:00 am. When we finally finished there was a big sigh of relief. Then, Jules turned over one of the tins and noticed the back label had the wrong ingredients on it. “No problem, it’s probably just one tin right?” we thought. Nope, turns out thousands of tins were mislabeled. At the time, we were ordering our tins from China (now we source all of our packagings domestically) so it wasn’t a simple return process. We knew the implications of this mistake meant many more months of waiting.
We went through the entire spectrum of emotions at that moment – anger, crying, and then eventually just laughed because I mean c’mon, who can make this up?
I offer this story because a lot of our business journey has been like this. There are really high highs and really low lows. A customer recently reached out saying that her 63-year-old sister who hadn’t slept well in over 20 years just began sleeping through the night after trying our Sleep Deep product. Her whole life has changed. That’s what keeps us going through the lows.
As you know, we’re big fans of Jimbo & Jules. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Jimbo & Jules was born from the belief that our health is deeply connected to the health of the planet, We craft all-natural wellness products with purpose. We are very excited to announce that we will be releasing the world’s first full zero-waste CBD product in the middle of July 2022! This product will change the paradigm that topical pain relief has to come at the expense of our planet.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I moved to Denver during the heat of the pandemic. Before 2020, I was living in Maryland. The access to nature here is obviously incredible. I’m a big skier and hiker so it really feels like a dream to be right on the edge of some of the world’s most epic outdoor experiences. I’m also a musician and the music scene here runs deep.
The best thing about Denver though is the people, hands down. I am part of many different communities that align with my values on a holistic level.
Two things that would make Denver even better? The ocean and lush flora. My heart definitely yearns for the ocean and the biodiverse landscapes of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. But hey, road trips are great!
