Today, we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Formea.
Hi Joshua, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I became interested in sewing after purchasing a yurt that needed repairs. I took it to Ellis Canvas Products (David Ellis Canvas at the time), and David Ellis told me it would be too much to repair, so he would instead show me how to fix it myself.
I practiced making parts and bags, and six months later, the yurt was still repaired, but I was working full-time as a tent maker at Ellis Canvas Products. I did this for a few years and then worked in the sewing industry and oil and gas industry off and on for the next 10 years.
In 2018, my wife and I opened a shop in Silverton, CO, where I started my own line of canvas bags, camping gear, and custom canvas work. Since that time, I have moved my shop to Hesperus, CO, and in addition to sewing my own products, I also produce branded bags for Jagged Edge Mountain Gear. A world-renowned outdoor gear shop in Telluride, CO.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The sewing industry can be brutal in the United States. Profit margins can be low, but I am determined to produce high-quality products and won’t let this obstacle affect that.
I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Wrought Supply?
I create canvas products that are built to last. I believe there is value in simplicity and dependability. I create canvas products that can be used and enjoyed by people from all walks of life. My products are versatile and functional, as well as esthetically pleasing.
What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe that natural fibers are making a comeback and that people are looking for well-made products that last.
I also believe that people are turning more towards non-technical gear that can be used in everyday life. Repairable gear is also seeing a big resurgence.
