Hidden Gems: Meet Kara Schultz of Bee Wellness Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Schultz.

Hi Kara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was always interested in natural health ever since my mom introduced me to yoga and homeopathy. It seemed like whatever ailment I was suffering from, my mom had a concoction or cure at the ready. It wasn’t until I started to get older and experience anxiety and depression, something that left my mom at a loss that I decided to really dig into health and wellness.

I had no idea what anxiety or depression was or that I even suffered from it. Not knowing what I was suffering from left me confused and upset. I struggled through middle school, high school, and even through college, trying to find something, anything that would help me feel back in my body and present again.

It wasn’t until my dad got sick with pancreatic cancer that I really decided to delve into health and wellness. As he got sicker and sicker, my knowledge about supplements, vegan and plant-based diets, and holistic medicine grew and grew. Although his cancer was too aggressive for any treatment plan at that point, I had already fallen head over heels for holistic health and wellness.

I spent years studying food and its relation to health; how I could build the perfect meal that was nutritious, delicious, and most of the time, sustainable for the most part. I became vegan for five years and learned as much as I possibly could about preparing food for people with allergies. I decided to go to culinary school where I learned not only about food and wine pairings but how certain food combinations can enhance the vitamins and mineral absorption in the body.

Then there was yoga and mindfulness, a whole other part of wellness that I had ignored for much too long. Although I had been exploring yoga since I was 10 years old, it wasn’t until after my dad died, when I turned 19, that my interest blossomed, or exploded so to speak. I decided to get my 200-hour yoga teacher certification in Pranotthan yoga, a type of yoga that focuses on our primal animal movement paired with Breathwork.

I explored what mindfulness was to me and what it looked like in my body. I used mindfulness as my guide and food as my medicine. I had collected so much knowledge about health and wellness over the years, I didn’t know what to do with it, I just wanted to share it with as many people as I could.

That’s when I decided to get my Health Coach certification. It was a culmination of all of the knowledge that I had acquired over my short life and so much more. I took that certification and ran with it all the way to the unopened door that lead me to create Bee Wellness Coaching.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Oh hell no has it been a smooth road! The best things in life are the hardest to come by. I would say one of the biggest struggles along this road has been finding my way to believing in myself.

I was big into letting others tell me what to do, or how to live. From simply trusting my intuition to what college I went to, everything in my life was an external decision that I let other people lead me to. While I am so grateful for those people in my life who were really just doing their best to look out for me, I wasn’t living MY life, I was living a collection of all of theirs.

It took me years and years of my life to get to the point where I am today to know that not only can I trust myself.

Not only do I trust my intuition now, but I know I can help so many people with what I have to offer.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Bee Wellness Coaching is a holistic health and wellness coaching business. My niche would be focused on mainly digestion, mindfulness, and stress management. I have a lot of experience both with my own life managing these issues along with others who have come to me looking for guidance.

I offer free consultations as well as wellness packages 1 month and 3 months long where we will meet virtually once a week for an hour to discuss goals, progress, and any challenges you might be facing along the way. Besides my wellness coaching, I do also offer virtual yoga and mindfulness classes and would consider in-person if you are local to the Denver-Metro area.

I feel like I stand out as a wellness coach because my top priority as your coach is that you feel confident in yourself, your intuition, and how you feel in your body. While many wellness coaches will start with the physical aspects of a person’s ailments, I believe the healing starts with the gut-brain connection.

Brand wise I would say I am very proud of the name of my business. I didn’t just choose the name Bee Wellness cause it was a fun play on words. I was vegan for five years and in those years I was able to immerse myself in a whole lot of environmental issues and injustices. Within that time, I learned a lot about ecosystems and how the displacement or endangerment of an animal can cause an entire ecosystem to collapse. One of those animals, more so a bug, is bees. Without bees, there would be no pollination, and no thriving plants, fruits, vegetables, or wildflowers. Without bees helping us grow our food, we as a species would not survive.

Bees are a huge example of the way that I run my business. As Bees support each other in the hive, that is what I want to do for my community. I want to be able to work together and support others on their wellness journey so that we can all thrive as a human race.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
Everyone in my life that has supported me in my journey deserves so much credit. My top supporter would have to be my mom. I’ve had such a long journey to get to the point of realizing that I wanted to be a health coach and never once did I sense an ounce of doubt from her.

Anytime I had doubts or would call her completely defeated, she would ask, “How can I support you right now”. By asking rather than just frantically trying to fix the issue for her own comfort, she met me with patience, love, and kindness.

Besides my mom, my best friend Zora and my partner Sam have been my biggest cheerleaders. They continued to remind me that I am capable and knowledgable and whenever I would come to them with doubts, they would endlessly remind me, those doubts are fears and fears are a thing to overcome, not shy away from.

As for my mentors, I have a couple. My first mentor would be my chef Carmen Foye at one of my favorite restaurants in Rhode Island, Sprout, and Lentil. I started working for her at the beginning of Sprout and Lentil and she not only gave me the confidence in my own ideas and opinions she supported me in every way and still does up until today.

My other mentor would be one of my close friends Alaina who is the proud owner of the Happy Human Method. I met her while she was still health coaching and she is the person that inspired me and gave me the confidence to take the leap into health coaching myself. Before I met her, Health Coaching wasn’t even a job on my radar. After becoming friends with her, I realized, no matter if this business could financially support me, this was something I needed to do.
