Hidden Gems: Meet Kelly Chang of Jupiter Stone Creative

Hi Kelly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hi, my name is Kelly Chang and I’m the owner of Jupiter Stone Creative, a calligraphy and engraving business based in Denver! I started Jupiter Stone Creative after making custom signs and calligraphy pieces for my wedding in 2019. While that was the official start to my business, I can think back to times in my childhood when I was already lettering away on notebooks, binders, and basically anything I could get my hands on. Being that it seemed like I was just doodling my time away, I never considered a business could ever come from it. My educational background is in computer engineering and after graduating college, I immediately jumped into a career in tech. My day-to-day revolves around interfacing with clients of all sorts and finding ways to architect solutions that address their needs. When my wedding came along and I found an opportunity to put my love of lettering to use, I slowly found that a market actually existed where I could continue using my experience being customer-centric, but also integrate my passion for calligraphy art. 

Fast forward to today, I love that my obsession of adding unique personalizations can now be shared with others in more ways than one. I specialize in providing calligraphy and engraving services to anyone looking to add an elevated experience to their brand and events, whether it’s a brand activation, PR event, corporate event, holiday function, product launch, wedding, you name it! I’m grateful that after a few years in business, I’ve worked some really cool events providing live calligraphy and engraving for luxury brands throughout the US.

My favorite part about what I do is being able to help my clients add elegant but simple touches to their events in a way that adds lifelong memorability. I know how hard it can be to make a vision come to life, but after years of experience planning events and creating high touch experiences, I wanted to help others achieve this and that’s what sparked the start of Jupiter Stone Creative. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As much as I’d love to say it has been a smooth, easy road, it most definitely has not. When I first started the business, I was in the DC area, where I grew up and spent most of my life. I was lucky enough to have a foundation of family, friends, and other connections to support me as I worked to establish myself. Just a few months after starting the business, I moved to Colorado. While I love it here, the move to a new state meant that alongside the usual hardships of starting and managing a small business, I now also had to take a few steps back and reestablish myself in a new state. With calligraphy and engraving, I can always ship products and travel for on-site events, but a majority of my work truly is local. A lot of work had to be invested to make connections and build new relationships in order to find my ground. While it’s still a work in progress, I’ve met a ton of amazing people in the Denver area that have already helped me tremendously along the way.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest piece of advice for anyone just starting out is to put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to ask questions! After starting from scratch in a new state, I had no choice but to meet new people and make some new connections. While this can seem daunting, I quickly learned that the support you can get from others is so valuable and you never know what friendships you might make along the way. No matter what industry you’re in, there are others in the same boat as you and you’ll find people who are more than willing to answer questions, lend a hand, and help you succeed.
