Hidden Gems: Meet Kelly Nix of Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Nix.

Kelly Nix

Hi Kelly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey to where I am today began in November 2020 with a simple but transformative visit to Luvin Arms, a farmed animal sanctuary just 11 minutes from my home. Despite living so close for nearly seven years, I was unaware of its existence until a close friend suggested we visit. Curious and eager to share a new experience with my two young children, we embarked on what the sanctuary described as a compassion tour.

Initially, our tour guide expressed concern about the suitability of the tour’s content for young children, given its honest discussions of farmed animals and factory farming. As both a parent and an educator, I believed it was important for my children to be exposed to these realities, so we proceeded.

The tour was eye-opening, but the most transformative moment came when we met Marley Rose, a calf new to the sanctuary. Interacting with Marley and learning about the dairy industry’s impact on animal families deeply moved me, especially with my children by my side. This encounter profoundly shifted my perspective and ignited a passion for animal advocacy.

Following that initial visit, I couldn’t stop sharing my experience at Luvin Arms with everyone I knew. I silently promised myself that should a position ever open up in the sanctuary’s educational department, I would pursue it, regardless of what I was doing at the time. My background as a principal in a K12 school seemed perfectly aligned with making a meaningful impact in this upcoming space.

Despite skepticism from friends and family about leaving a well-paying job for a position at an animal sanctuary, I was determined. When a Human Educator and Outreach Coordinator job was posted in February 2022, I applied without hesitation. This step marked the beginning of an exciting and fulfilling journey.

In June 2023, I became the Managing Director of Luvin Arms. As of today, March 2024, I continue to serve in this role proudly. This journey, which began with a simple visit to the sanctuary, has evolved into a profoundly fulfilling path, marking a significant shift in my career and personal life.

My transition from a visitor, moved by the plight of animals at the sanctuary, to a key figure in its leadership underscores the transformative power of passion, commitment, and a steadfast belief in advocating for those without a voice. My experience illustrates how a single moment of connection can lead to profound changes, not just for myself but for the cause I’ve dedicated my life to.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to my role as Managing Director at Luvin Arms has not been smooth; it has been filled with challenges and obstacles. Transitioning from a stable, well-paying education job to the nonprofit sector involved significant personal and professional risks. One of the initial hurdles was convincing my family and friends of the value and importance of this career shift. There were doubts and questions regarding the practicality of leaving a secure position for the uncertainty of working at an animal sanctuary.

Furthermore, adapting to the nonprofit world, particularly in an organization dedicated to farmed animal advocacy, presented its unique challenges. The emotional toll of confronting animal suffering daily while striving to make a tangible difference required profound adjustment. There was also the challenge of securing funding and resources to support the sanctuary’s mission—a task that demands creativity, persistence, and the ability to inspire others to see the value in supporting animal welfare.

Despite these struggles, the journey has been enriching. Each challenge is an opportunity for growth, both personally and for the sanctuary. Overcoming skepticism, building a supportive community, and seeing the direct impact of our work on animals’ lives have been profoundly fulfilling achievements. These experiences have reinforced the belief that passion and dedication can drive meaningful change, even in the face of adversity.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Luvin Arms is a sanctuary dedicated to providing a haven for animals who have experienced neglect and/or abuse or were destined for slaughter. Our mission is deeply rooted in the principle of Ahimsa, which means nonviolence toward all living beings. We specialize in rescuing and providing lifelong care to farmed animals, ranging from cows and pigs to chickens and ducks. Each of these animals has been rescued from a variety of harsh circumstances, including factory farms, slaughterhouse-bound trucks, and neglect or abuse situations.

What sets us apart is our comprehensive animal welfare approach. We not only focus on the physical well-being of our residents but also prioritize their social, emotional, and cognitive needs, ensuring they live out their lives in a nurturing and caring environment. Our dedication to advocacy is another defining feature. By sharing our rescued residents’ stories, we aim to inspire and educate the public about the realities of animal agriculture and encourage more compassionate lifestyle choices.

We are most proud of our commitment to creating a compassionate community. Our sanctuary serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to what can be achieved when individuals come together to make a difference in the lives of animals. We are also proud of our efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity, ensuring our community is a welcoming space for all, regardless of background or beliefs.

We want our readers to know that our sanctuary is more than just a place of refuge for animals; it’s a movement toward a kinder, more compassionate world. Whether it’s through participating in our educational tours, volunteering, or supporting our mission, there are numerous ways to get involved.

Our services and offerings are designed to connect people with the stories of our residents, fostering empathy and understanding for farmed animals. By supporting our sanctuary, you’re not just helping us care for rescued animals; you’re taking a stand against cruelty and advocating for a world where all beings are treated with respect and kindness.

For those interested in learning more about our work, visiting the sanctuary, or finding out how you can support our mission, we encourage you to explore our offerings and join us in making a difference. Together, we can save lives and champion animal welfare.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
As Managing Director at Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary, my perspective on risk-taking is deeply connected to our mission of advocating for animal welfare and promoting compassionate living. Taking significant risks has been a fundamental part of driving change within the complex landscape of animal agriculture and consumer awareness.

One of the significant risks I undertook was the pivot from a career with a clear trajectory in education to leading a nonprofit sanctuary focused on farmed animals. This move was driven by a profound commitment to making a difference in the lives of animals and challenging societal norms around food and agriculture. The risk involved was not just personal, in terms of financial stability and career path, but also organizational, as it entailed steering Luvin Arms in directions that often challenged powerful agricultural interests and deeply ingrained consumer habits.

Another considerable risk has been engaging in and promoting research into “humane washing,” a term encompassing misleading labeling practices in the animal agriculture industry. Addressing this issue head-on involves legal challenges, industry backlash, and public perception risks. Such endeavors can affect the sanctuary’s operations, funding, and community support. However, these risks are weighed against the potential for impactful education and advocacy that can lead to more informed consumer choices and improved animal welfare standards.

My approach to risk revolves around believing that significant, meaningful change often requires bold steps and challenging prevailing narratives. It’s about evaluating impact potential against ethical considerations and long-term goals. Risks are taken not for the sake of risk itself but as calculated decisions to advance our mission and amplify our message of compassion and nonviolence.

From my viewpoint, risk-taking is an integral component of leadership and advocacy. It’s about strategically navigating uncertainties to foster change and push forward with our goals of enhancing animal welfare and encouraging a more ethical relationship between humans and non-human animals with whom we share our world. These risks, taken thoughtfully and with a clear purpose, are pivotal to our efforts to educate, advocate, and inspire a shift toward more compassionate and sustainable living.
