Hidden Gems: Meet Lela Chilunga of Lela’s Honey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lela Chilunga.

Lela Chilunga

Lela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Lela’s Honey is my COVID baby. During the pandemic, many people were afraid of getting sick and were also depressed. My family is my treasure, so I committed to doing all I could to keep us happy and healthy. After reading turmeric protected against viruses and was an effective mood elevator I knew I had to incorporate it into our diet.

After many failed attempts, I created our turmeric honey. The chai flavor appealed to everyone, the requests grew and Lela’s Honey became a business. Since then we have grown to fifteen gourmet flavors that are good from remedy to recipe! All the flavors are available on our website Lelashoney.com and at our inviting little kiosk at Park Meadows Mall.

We are always cultivating our apiary in Strasburg, CO which you can visit during the spring and summer months. I’m thankful for the opportunity to present my product to the world and excited to continue growing!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would not say the road has been smooth simply because entrepreneurship is a student’s journey. You may progress past preschool but then there’s kindergarten! I can’t call any specific struggles to mind simply because the reward overshadows them.

I liken business ownership to parenting. A new business is like a newborn. You’re going to have sleepless nights and probably get some poop on you at some point. Even so, there’s no way the struggles compare to the joy that new creation brings!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a gourmet honey brand. We specialize in organically flavored honey that is good for recipes as well as remedies.

Our honey is handcrafted in small batches and kissed by the sun. I tell people this is an authentic expression of who I am. Every jar is a little drop of love from my heart to you!

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The honey industry is positioned to grow by billions in the next 5-10 years. Bees produce so many things that add vitality to our lives. We already use bee products in our healthcare, home care, and beauty products.

We are also seeing more people in the West looking for holistic treatments such as apitherapy. Some studies suggest prolonged proximity to beehives extends our lifespan. Our industry is full of possibilities and I’m excited to be a part!
