Hidden Gems: Meet Maralea Norden of Maralea Norden – Wedding Officiant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maralea Norden.

Hi Maralea, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I became an ordained minister specifically to officiate weddings. I have always been a self-sufficient person, drawn to working for myself and surrounding my work with positivity. I wanted to be in business with happy people—and I felt that officiating weddings was something I was meant to do.

I performed my first ceremony in 2025, not long after launching my business here in Colorado and setting up my page on WeddingWire. It was an intimate elopement out in the country near Longmont, with a breathtaking view of Long’s Peak. The couple included the traditional presentation of the Mangalsutra, a beautiful East Indian custom, and were pleasantly surprised that I understood its meaning—and could pronounce it! The whole experience was exhilarating. The ceremony was peaceful, heartfelt, and left me with the feeling that I had played a small part in something extraordinary. That feeling has stayed with me through every wedding since.

Before officiating, I worked for many years as a real estate agent, often with first-time homebuyers. That experience taught me to help people manage expectations, stay calm during emotional moments, and visualize joyful outcomes—skills that have transferred seamlessly to officiating. Wedding planning can be stressful, but I help couples stay focused on the beauty of the moment. Every ceremony I write is original, inspired by the couple’s story—whether it’s two people who met on a school bus, avid gardeners who planted wildflower seeds during their vows, or a blended family where everyone, including the children, took part in a sand ceremony.

I took time early on to study the wedding ceremony itself—its symbolism, cultural traditions, and modern variations like handfasting and boho themes. I launched my website, MaraleaNorden.com, to provide couples with helpful resources, from county clerk contacts and venue ideas to my services, pricing, and blog. I write every script myself, collaborate closely with each couple, and stay in touch up to the big day to make sure their ceremony feels authentic to them—right down to remembering if the dog is carrying the rings!

What makes my approach unique is the emphasis I place on giving couples exactly the ceremony they want. I gift each couple a binder with their custom script so they can relive their vows anytime—the very beginning of their story together.

My business continues to grow as I meet new couples from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins. Each one brings their own vision and creativity, and I learn something from every experience. Looking ahead, I hope to officiate a wedding every weekend—and to be remembered as the officiant who made even the toughest dads tear up with joy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a relatively smooth transition for me, but like many small business owners today, I’ve noticed that the real challenge is working with couples in a changing economy. I try to be as flexible as possible with pricing and payment plans so that couples can still have the ceremony they envision without added financial stress.

The hardest part isn’t writing the ceremonies or managing the details—it’s helping people feel comfortable enough to say, “This is my budget, what can you do with it?” Weddings are deeply personal, and people often feel awkward discussing money when emotions are high. My goal is to take that pressure off by being transparent and collaborative. Love deserves to be celebrated, and I never want cost to stand in the way of that.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is called Maralea Norden – Wedding Officiant. I officiate weddings across Colorado, from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins, and I specialize in creating ceremonies that are entirely personal to each couple. No two scripts are ever the same—I write every ceremony from scratch to reflect the couple’s story, style, and values.

What sets me apart is the time I take to really get to know the people I’m marrying. I learn how they met, what moments define their relationship, and what tone they want for their wedding—whether that’s romantic, lighthearted, spiritual, or family-focused. Each ceremony is crafted with care, and couples receive a keepsake binder of their full script as a memento of their day.

I’m most proud of building a business that celebrates love in all its forms, without judgment or limitation. My goal is to make each couple feel seen, supported, and joyful from our first meeting to their “I do.”

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is the day my mother married my adoptive father. I wore a light blue dress with a little bell sewn into the petticoat, and the ceremony took place in Washington Park at the edge of Grassmere Lake. I remember how park-goers stopped to watch, becoming an impromptu audience, and how my aunts each baked a layer of the wedding cake while my mom and her best friend made her dress. My Aunt Pam curled my hair and added a touch of lip gloss, and I felt so special. The whole day was filled with love and laughter—everyone was happy. It was beautiful and simple, and even then, I think I understood how powerful a wedding could be.
