Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Starling.
Hi Marie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story – that’s an interesting question! I started because I say the universe pushed me down. I was in undergrad and didn’t know what I wanted to do, floundering quite frankly, and I fell and hurt myself. I didn’t know that there were real chiropractors, and I went to this school and went to a student (who I then dated because he was really cute) and got to see the back side of the school. This taught me that I wanted to go do that: help people, not give them drugs, and I got to own my own business – sign me up! I started taking all of my undergraduate requirements and got done with all of that very, very quickly once I figured out what I wanted to do. I got all the way through undergraduate and chiropractic school in 6 years (which is very fast). I graduated and started my own business from the beginning, which was dumb because I struggled, but continued to learn! I got interested in functional medicine maybe 5 years in (and this was before functional medicine existed as functional medicine) because I was unhealthy. I had extreme fatigue that was present for about 20 years all told, GI issues, brain fog, and I just was living by force of will. That’s when I started discovering that I had these things because my body wasn’t working. In my case, my belly wasn’t working properly from antibiotic use as a child. I had fungal overgrowth, bacterial imbalances, and all kinds of fun, interesting, and wild stuff! So, that was my story, I don’t know if I really want to tell that story in public, but maybe! But it’s been an awesome journey.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it has not been a smooth road! It’s been an ebb and flow road in terms of the business, which is hard! It’s hard to be a doctor and a good business owner. I’ve been fortunate that it’s always come, but there have definitely been some struggles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am a functional medicine doctor. What that means is part naturopath, part chiropractor, part therapist. I have decided to specialize in internal disorders naturally. I am highly customized and highly comprehensive. I have very deep strategic solutions as well as energetic and emotional solutions for our patients to regain their health! I am known for balancing hormones in women (and men, but especially women) from a microbiome approach – not just giving you hormones, but actually fixing the reason that they’re off in the first place. What sets me apart from others is that I am the top 1% of functional medicine doctors in the country because I am thorough and highly customized. I don’t miss anything – I turn over all the stones and we look at all the dark corners! We start with the low-hanging fruit and balance with a very, very high focus on the microbiome because it is the basis of health. What I want our readers to know about our brand and services is that we really listen and take the time to get to the unique issue underlying our patients’ symptoms – it’s not one size fits all.
How do you define success?
Success for me is actually about deep relationships and having enough money to do what I want, but as a result of providing a really valuable, important service and teaching others. I define patient success as really returning to health and being armed with the tools to manage their own health moving forward. It’s reconnecting them to their own self-awareness and giving them the tools so they know what to do to stay healthy, not just get healthy. I think that’s really important.
