Hidden Gems: Meet May Jeffers of Cappadocia Turkish Towels

Today we’d like to introduce you to May Jeffers.

May Jeffers

Hi May, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is May Jeffers, and I’m one of the co-founders of Cappadocia Turkish Towels. Six years ago, my friends Birsen, Muhittin, and I made the big move from Turkey to Denver, not knowing exactly what the future held. We all had a dream of starting our own business, but we had no idea where to begin. It wasn’t until 2023, when we decided to take a leap of faith and turn our passion into a reality, that things started to come together.

Our first big moment came before our products even arrived. With only product images in hand, I started sharing them online. To my surprise, the response was immediate, and our very first customer reached out to place an order. I will never forget the excitement when she came to pick up her order at the Farmers Market on our very first day. That moment was the spark that ignited everything.

Today, we’re proud to offer over 5,000 products, ranging from luxurious Turkish towels to cozy blankets, all crafted with care. We sell at markets across Denver and online, always focusing on providing the highest quality and exceptional customer service. What started as a small idea has now grown into something much bigger, and we’re so grateful for every step of this journey.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our journey has definitely not been smooth. Starting a business in a new country came with its own set of challenges. At the beginning, we weren’t sure where to start or what steps to take. One of the biggest struggles was setting up and breaking down our booth at the markets, especially with the unpredictable weather. Every week, we had to arrive early to set up, and then deal with the sun or rain throughout the day. Despite the challenges, the direct connection with customers made it all worthwhile.

Another hurdle was ensuring our products arrived on time. Sometimes, shipping delays meant we couldn’t display our items at the markets as planned. However, even when things were out of our control, we always strived to provide the best experience for our customers.

We were operating with a very limited budget in the beginning, so we had to approach everything carefully and in small steps. We faced many difficulties, but we came together as a strong team and overcame every obstacle. The support and interest from our customers became our biggest motivation. Every day, taking one more step forward made us stronger.

In the end, these challenges only made us more resilient, and every obstacle has been a step towards success.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always curious and determined. I loved being creative and finding ways to solve problems or improve things around me. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit—finding ways to turn ideas into something meaningful.

I was also a people person and enjoyed building connections. I loved listening to others’ stories, learning from them, and creating meaningful relationships. This love for connection is something that continues to inspire me in both my personal life and my business today.

I was deeply connected to my culture and family values, which shaped my passion for traditional craftsmanship. Seeing the beauty in handmade items and learning about the effort that goes into creating something with care always fascinated me.
