Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikyla Young-Bayless.
Hi Mikyla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
i’ve been a Marriage & Family therapist for 10 years, I graduated from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas. In that time, I’ve worked with many different populations…foster families, folks with eating disorder, high conflict couples, sex trafficking survivors, and more. My journey has taken me from Kansas to Colorado, and now I’m in a thriving, fully online private practice where I’m grateful every day to do what I love and learn from amazing people.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
it’s been steady, but not smooth. The nature of being a therapist is to reframe suffering as an opportunity for strength, and to turn obstacles into a deeper belief in resilience and community. Imposter syndrome is a recurring struggle, as is a fluctuating economy that affects people’s mental health and the resources to pay for it. There are times of the emotional toll becomes heavy, but so far it hasn’t been too much to bear.
We’ve been impressed with Incline Counseling, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
my business is a fully online teletherapy practice, I take a couple of insurances and mostly cash pay. I love working with high conflict couples and eating disorders, those have become my forte over 10 years of being in full-time practice.
I’m incredibly proud of the stability and integrity I’ve established in my business, and the amount of trust my clients place in me. It always means a lot when I get a referral from a current client and I know that they trust me.
What sets me apart from other therapist might be the exact thing that we have in common…the personality, humor, intelligence, and creativity that I bring to each session. I’m confident in my ability to help people, and when I don’t know what to do I’m confident in how to find the answer.
I’d love your readers to know that starting a therapy journey is incredibly creative thing to do….and much like climbing a mountain, it really helps to have a guide.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I would’ve loved to know more about how insurance panels and taxes work when I got started! I’d recommend anyone to do a deep dive into these things so as to suffer less anxiety in the unknown.
My advice for starting out as a therapist would be to go to therapy yourself, and don’t take lately the relief that your clients can get just by knowing you’re really listening. You don’t have to have all the answers…you don’t anyway. But keep growing, keep asking questions, and be true to your values.
