Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Lundy.
Hi Nate, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started working in radio at the age of 16 in my hometown of Corvallis, Oregon. I continued that journey through college at Oregon State University and began my career after graduation in Portland. My radio journey took me from there to Charleston, South Carolina, Memphis, Tennessee, and to San Antonio, Texas. When I left San Antonio in 2007, I went to work for EA SPORTS in Orlando, Florida as the head of live production. I absolutely loved my time with EA SPORTS, but I missed the radio world so I returned to my roots when I moved to Denver in January of 2010. I spent the first 6 years of my time in Denver as Program Director and morning show co-host at 104.3 The Fan. After leaving The Fan, I hosted a nationally syndicated television show called “The Fantasy Football Hour” with Brad Evans, Lauren Gardner and Katy Winge. The show was produced locally by Altitude Television and at its peak was available in over 100 million households.
In 2017 a unique opportunity was presented to me to take over Mile High Sports, a magazine, radio and digital media outlet started in 2002. I put together a group of investors and acquired the company in July 2017 and have been its President and CEO ever since. The ability to take my media background and apply it to my own company was exciting and despite the challenges of being a small business owner I have loved every day of it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like so many business owners, COVID was a tremendous challenge. We’re a sports media company and there were no sports being played. Our revenue stream relies on businesses buying advertising and not only were companies not spending money, some of our partners were going out of business completely. I truly wondered if we were going to make it through. We knew at the beginning of 2020 that sports betting was going to become legal in Colorado, providing a new revenue and content path for Mile High Sports. But the timing of COVID even disrupted that opportunity. We made it through, obviously, but I know it would not have been possible without the incredible team of people we have at MHS and their dedication to not letting us fail.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mile High Sports?
What started in 2002 as a magazine dedicated to Colorado sports and its fans developed over the years to include a radio station as well as a high traffic website covering our favorite teams. Today our magazine continues as does our website, but we also have our social media reach, a popular YouTube channel, the most popular Denver Nuggets website, DenverStiffs.com as well as ColoradoPreps.com and our newest venture, HockeyMountainHigh.com. We cover the teams that we love. We are fans first. But we also aren’t here to just be ‘homers.’ We call it like we see it. We celebrate championships, sure. But we also call out the problems as we see them and don’t allow ourselves to be blind fans.
A 23-year history means we have deep roots in not only covering the teams, but in the community we serve. We are proud to support several non-profit groups through advertising and promotional donations. We love to showcase the work athletes are doing in our communities.
There are plenty of ways companies can market themselves to fans in Colorado. But, we are the only local, independent company. I’m very proud of that.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Aside from its natural beauty, I love how excited sports fans are in Denver. Year in and year out, the fans are rabid. From car flags to tattoos, Denver fans are some of the best in the country. That is not only fun as a fellow fan, but it makes our jobs that much more exciting every day.
What do I like least? The traffic. As they say, “Denver is exactly one hour away from Denver.” I love that people have recognized the beauty of this city and state, but the population boom has definitely been challenging for everyone.
