Hidden Gems: Meet Niema Hughes of NXTLVL Entertainment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Niema Hughes

Hi Niema, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in a single parent home with my strong black mother, I learned the value of hard work and determination at a young age. My mother always emphasized the importance of education and independence, instilling in me the belief that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. My grandparents were a constant source of inspiration and encouragement for me as well. They always believed in my potential and pushed me to strive for greatness in everything I did. From a young age, they instilled in me the importance of hard work, determination, and never giving up on our dreams.

After graduating from college, I found myself juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet. I was saving every penny I earned in the hopes of one day starting my own business. It was tough, but I knew that the sacrifices I was making would eventually pay off.
After years of dreaming about starting my own business, I finally took the leap and launched my first venture – a business consulting firm. I was confident in my expertise and eager to help other entrepreneurs navigate the complexities of running a successful business. However, despite my best efforts, my consulting business failed to gain traction. I struggled to attract clients and generate the revenue needed to sustain the business, forcing me to reconsider my approach.

Undeterred by my first setback, I decided to try my hand at a new business venture – creating self-care gift sets paired with personalized mugs. I believed that offering unique and thoughtful products would resonate with consumers looking for meaningful gifts for themselves or loved ones. I poured my heart and soul into designing and curating each set, but once again, my business failed to take off. I faced challenges with production costs, marketing, and competition in the market, leading to disappointing sales and ultimately, the closure of my second business.

Despite two failed attempts, I refused to give up on my entrepreneurial aspirations. Determined to find success, I launched my third business venture – selling personalized gifts and favors for special occasions. I curated a selection of customized products, from wedding favors to birthday gifts, and invested in targeted marketing strategies to reach my target audience. While I saw some initial success with my third business, I struggled to scale the operation and faced stiff competition from larger companies in the industry.

Through each failed business attempt, I learned valuable lessons about resilience, adaptability, and the importance of market research and strategy in entrepreneurship. While the road to success was fraught with challenges and setbacks, I refused to let my failures define me. Instead, I used them as opportunities to learn, grow, and refine my approach to business.

Still fighting for my dream, I decided to pursue the party entertainment industry. I had always been drawn to the joy and excitement that comes with planning events and bringing people together, so I knew that starting my own business in this industry was the right move for me.

I invested my money into purchasing equipment and supplies, and began promoting my services to friends, family, and anyone else who would listen. It wasn’t easy at first, but I was determined to succeed.

As word of mouth spread and my reputation grew, my business began to flourish. I found myself booking more and more events, from birthday parties to weddings to corporate functions. It was a dream come true to see my passion turn into a successful business.

Looking back on my journey, I am grateful for the lessons my family taught me and the values they instilled in me. I know that without their guidance and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Starting my own party entertainment business was a challenge, but it was a challenge that I was more than ready to take on. And as I continue to grow and expand my business, I know that my family’s strength and resiliency will always be with me, guiding me every step of the way.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business had always been a dream of mine, but little did I know that the biggest obstacle I would face was myself. Just as I was on the cusp of launching my own venture, I was hit with a new and unexpected challenge – a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Navigating the world of entrepreneurship is already a daunting task, but doing so while managing a mental health condition added an extra layer of complexity to the journey. The highs and lows of bipolar disorder often left me feeling overwhelmed and uncertain, making it difficult to focus on building and growing my business.

There were days when I felt invincible, brimming with creativity and ideas for my business. I would work tirelessly, pouring my heart and soul into every aspect of the venture. But then, without warning, the pendulum would swing, and I would find myself in the depths of depression, struggling to find the motivation to even get out of bed, let alone run a business.

The stigma surrounding mental health made it challenging to open up about my struggles, leading me to grapple with feelings of shame and isolation. I was afraid that my diagnosis would be seen as a weakness, that it would hinder my ability to succeed as an entrepreneur. But through therapy, support from loved ones, and a newfound sense of self-compassion, I slowly began to accept and embrace my diagnosis as a part of who I am.

As I learned to manage my bipolar disorder and prioritize self-care, I found new ways to navigate the hurdles of entrepreneurship. I sought out resources and tools to help me stay organized, set realistic goals, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. I leaned on my support system for guidance and encouragement, knowing that I didn’t have to face my challenges alone.

While my journey as an entrepreneur with bipolar disorder was far from easy, it taught me valuable lessons about resilience, perseverance, and the power of self-acceptance. I learned that my diagnosis did not define me or determine my ability to succeed in business. Instead, it became a source of strength and motivation, driving me to push past my limitations and strive for greatness in spite of the obstacles in my path. And with each step forward, I found myself growing stronger, more confident, and more determined to build a successful business on my own terms.
