Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Jaye.
Hi Stephen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
On one level, my journey has shifted directions many times, but the overall themes have been quite consistent. I have always been interested in the overall state of the human condition and how we can all live our best, most enjoyable, authentic lives. This first took the form of obsession with the weather.
As a child, I observed how weather patterns can influence what we do each day and desired to make the most of the more pleasant days for outdoor activity. I also read a lot about people, including the decline in community that occurred over the second half of the 20th century. This trend intensified with the adoption of smartphones and social media and we are now living in a loneliness epidemic.
This is why I founded Reclaim Your Time, to help people cut back on their unintentional screen time. With my interest in helping people overcome societal conditioning and the limitations one-size-fits-all standards place upon us, I also started a podcast called Action’s Antidotes, where I interview people who are pursuing their true passions outside the standard, traditional work setup to encourage listeners to follow their hearts.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have to admit that I have struggled quite a bit due to issues related to confidence, truly believing in myself, believing I deserve a life that truly matches who I am, and believing that I am capable of making it happen. I have found myself in several less-than-ideal job situations where I was not appreciated for my true value and was in roles that did not suit me well.
These are likely a result of not asserting my true value in these settings. I also struggle to overcome societal conditioning myself, specifically around fear related to not being judged fairly by the people around me and therefore not getting the job, the business, or even the social acceptance I feel I deserve. This is an ongoing struggle, but I genuinely feel like over the years I have gotten better.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Reclaim Your Time offers clients three ways to work with me to learn the methods I used to reduce my overall screen time to nearly 50% less than the average American. At www.lessscreentime.com there is a self-directed course and information about both 1-on-1 and group coaching around the program.
What makes the program unique is that it taps into behavior change techniques to replace unnecessary scrolling and video watching with new behaviors tailored to each individual’s situation. Rather than relying on willpower, or even shame around the habits nearly all of us have developed due to addictive attention-harvesting technology, it creates a positive behavior change associated with a desired life outcome.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I consider someone to be successful if their life is in alignment with who they are. On a high level, this means that most of what they expend their energy towards is something that is significant and reflective of their specific individual interests, values, and passions. I genuinely feel that our traditional methods of motivating people are all wrong, and it has led to a consistently low employee engagement rate of 32%-36% in the United States in recent years. Globally, that number is even lower.
People need to be motivated by the ability to create a life that truly reflects themselves and advancing missions they care about rather than fear of losing their job or the promise of a bonus that often represents an insignificant sum of money. When more people are genuinely, intrinsically motivated to work on whatever they are spending their energy doing, more interesting things will get done. This has the potential to dramatically improve the economy.
