Hidden Gems: Meet Susan Loriho of Susan’s Samosas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Loriho.

Hi Susan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Hello, my name is Susan Loriho, I’m originally from South Sudan, at age six, I moved to refugee camp in Kenya after that stay in the camp for couple years and I end up go to the orphanage escaping a decade long civil war in Sudan. At 18, I journey to US as one of the lost girls, finding my way to Boulder Colorado. Face with entirely new culture, new language, and even the snow, I was determined to make the most out of life. Through handwork and dedication, I graduate from college and began a career in Early childhood education. Then Covid-19 struck.

Once again, facing adversity, I lost my job and with it, the means to support my son and myself. In April 7th, 2020, a friend text right after I got a letter from my work that said I got laid off from my job, asking how I’m doing with my son and I told her that I got laid off work today, and after couple hours she text me asking if I can make them samosas and they can pay me, but I told her that I can make it for them but they don’t have to pay me since they are my friends, to make it short I end up make 36 samosas for them and they pay me $72 that day and then ask me if she can share the information with friends by email them, That week a got a lot of calls and email from people ordering samosas from me, since then I have been making samosas and trying to expand my business in the next to 18 months plan. I did what I always do, since I was a little girl, I persevered! I made lemonade out of lemons, or in my case, delectable samosas. With love and positivity, I has sold 10,000 samosas locally.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well, I come to learn that there is never easy way to operate the business of your own, especially if only one person operate it. Especially when it come to customers in what they need, I have to come up with solution on adding value to products and adding the right ingredient that consumers may value. The struggle that we have at Susan’s samosas is how we can come up with samosas that contains gluten-free, and this has been really challenging in our community and generally in my business. When it come to my personal struggle as a single mom, driving around dropping off my son to school and going to the kitchen to cook and doing delivery is a process of learning how to get use it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Susan’s Samosas offers the unique, vibrant, and authentic flavors of South Sudan brought right to your front door! Made by yours truly, I intend to share the food I love with the world I love. And by doing so I have been able to send support back home to the impoverished nations of Kenya and South Sudan, to my family, and to my people! Susan’s Samosas offers pick-up, delivery & catering services throughout Boulder & Denver counties. Every ingredient I used are organic from Colorado organic local farms.

Americans have more demands on their time than ever before. And while they are often too busy to cook delicious homemade meals for their families, they still desire to sit down with their families for high-quality & authentic homemade meals. Moreover, people want the option to choose from a spectrum of different foods, to experience the tastes of other cultures & traditions. Currently, due to the mass corporatization & homogenization increasing within the foodservice industry, less & less variety & authenticity is available. However, this has not negated the consumer’s desire for authenticity at their dinner table. At Susan’s Samosa’s we aim to bridge the gap between the lack of availability within the foodservice industry & people’s want for authentic, high-quality, homemade, diverse foods.
