Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Massey.
Hi Susan , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started as a Realtor 20+ years ago and was fortunate to find a niche with custom home builders. They would have me review blueprints and make suggestions for changes before they went to construction and then help with finishes and staging prior to going on the market. Soon I began working with friends and neighbors remodeling kitchens and bathrooms and loved it, so I launched Massey Interiors out of our basement. It was a great addition to real estate and I felt like I had it all. Then, three years ago my husband and I were walking Downtown Longmont and this little shop had a sign in their window looking for someone to sub-lease the space. I just could not get it out of my head, was a ready to layer in a third business? We decided to pursue and if things fell into place we would go for it, everything fell into place. Three months later, Fig and Ivy was open for business. My husband took a three year break from his job to support me in my dream, without him, I could have never taken the leap.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing worth having goes off without a hitch but when it is meant to be, things do seam to fall into place. Our opening was delayed several times, first due to construction issues and secondly we both came down with Covid 3 days before opening. We rescheduled for November 2nd and dove right into holiday season. With no retail experience it was quite a challenge but we’ve slowly figured things out.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I now own three business, Massey Real Estate and Massey Interiors which operate out of Fig & Ivy, a brick and mortar store in Downtown Longmont. The store is like having a live portfolio and is set up a little like a living room. People can come in have a seat enjoy a cup of coffee or an iced tea and flip through a book, buy a candle and see my work. The three businesses may sound like a lot but they really compliment one another and meld into a full service shop. I can help you find a house, show you what it could be, oversee the project and furnish it all from one location. We carry smaller, hard to find items and brands like Jan Barboglio, Montes Doggett and Zafferano. Our products are all natural, cotton, wool, alpaca and soy candles. We also have a gallery and represent several local, female artists; Megan McCarthy, Annie O’brien-Gonzales and Cheri Vilona.
You may see our little purple van running around town, the “ZhuZh” mobile. It’s a great service where you send us pictures of your space and we load up the van with items from the store, throws, pillows, drink tables, lamps, etc. come to your house and work with items you already have and love, and pull it all together. We ZhuZh it and it’s been super fun.
Massey Interiors can help you with anything from a new rug, furniture and wallpaper to a full remodel. We have a unique software that allows us to draw everything out using specific wallpapers, paint, tile so that you can see almost exactly what it will look like before you even get started. It is important to us that people truly love where they live and feel that everyone deserves the peace and harmony beautiful surroundings provide. I don’t have a “cut-and-paste” style, I’m here to make your home yours, to push you a little outside your comfort zone but ultimately each home should be as unique as you and your family. This makes each project, fresh, exciting and new.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I am very fortunate to be able to do all the things I love and feel very blessed. Business is not without its challenges and is constantly changing but it is exciting and keeps life interesting.
