Hidden Gems: Meet Tracy Tyler of Mindfulness Psychiatry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Tyler.

Tracy Tyler

Hi Tracy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi! My name is Tracy Tyler, and I am the mother of a daughter, two sons who are all adults, and a new grandson! My journey from a girl with dreams of becoming an opera singer to a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner specializing in medication management for adult Colorado residents has been a winding road of unexpected turns and invaluable lessons.

Life doesn’t always unfold as planned, and that’s a lesson I’ve come to embrace. After high school, my dream of pursuing opera took a detour, leading me to earn a degree in Music Education. Yet, the elusive teaching job in music post-graduation nudged me into the unexpected realm of car sales.

Fate, however, had a plan of its own. During my time in the car business, I met my ex-husband, and our journey unfolded into the joy of raising three incredible children. Embracing the role of a stay-at-home mom became a cherished chapter, filled with the wonders of parenthood.

Yet, life’s twists took an unforeseen turn, and I found myself a single mom with my youngest child still in diapers. Faced with the need to support my family, I transitioned into a job as a vet tech, sparking an interest in the medical field that would redefine my career trajectory.

This pivotal moment set me on the path to becoming an Emergency Room nurse, where I discovered my passion and niche, caring for patients struggling with mental health challenges. From there, I began working at an inpatient psychiatric hospital. This fueled my desire to further my education and become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in an effort to educate others and destigmatize mental health treatment.

Today, my goal is clear – to help individuals feel like the best version of themselves through medication management and supportive therapy. It’s a role that aligns with my true purpose, and as I reflect on my journey, I finally feel like I am exactly where I had always hoped to be in both my life and my career.

The challenges and unexpected turns were stepping stones, shaping my resilience and determination. Perseverance has been my compass, guiding me to a place where I not only believe but know that I am capable of achieving my goals no matter the obstacles. This journey, though different from what I once envisioned, has brought me to a fulfilling and purposeful space, and I am grateful for every twist and turn that led me here.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey into the realm of psychiatric nursing has been nothing short of transformative, and the road hasn’t always been smooth. Juggling education, work, and personal life demanded unwavering commitment. Navigating the complexities of mental health care training, coupled with the emotional toll of crisis intervention, presented formidable obstacles. Yet, it was these challenges that fueled my determination.

Confronting the stigma surrounding mental health became a mission, and advocating for increased access to care became a constant focus. Staying ahead of evolving policies and refining treatment approaches has been integral to overcoming these hurdles.

The landscape of mental health care has posed its own set of challenges. Policy changes, especially during the pandemic, created a dynamic environment that demanded quick adaptation. Navigating through these shifts required resilience and an ability to stay informed, ensuring that my practice remained patient-centered despite external challenges.

Speaking of the pandemic, brought a unique set of obstacles. The increased strain on mental health services and the amplified impact on individuals’ well-being underscored the importance of accessibility and destigmatization. Balancing the surge in demand with the evolving policies in response to the pandemic tested my ability to provide effective and empathetic care during a challenging time.

Despite the hurdles, the rewards have been immeasurable. Witnessing positive impacts, being a source of support, and contributing to the destigmatization of mental health have defined my journey. Today, as a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I stand at the intersection of passion and purpose, committed to making a lasting impact on the lives of those grappling with mental health challenges.
