Hidden Gems: Meet Tyler Youngwerth of Pure Bouldering Gym

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Youngwerth.

Hi Tyler, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We have always been a family-owned and operated climbing gym in the heart of Colorado Springs.

We are small but have the best community of people around. We have been around for nearly 14 years and we have grown to a small community, but a huge diversity of people and climbers. From beginners to experts, all play well together here. We are small so we have been able to allow 24/7 access for the past few years and still be at a very affordable price.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have been doing pretty well over the years and just like all other small businesses we have had ups and downs. During COVID, we froze all our memberships to make sure people could get by and kept our employees busy with distant cleaning jobs, and so on, so it for sure took a toll on us.

With the very committed members we have many people have been climbing with our gym for over 10 years so they have become family and that is why we keep it running. We are not in the business to create a huge income but to create a huge family!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are all about Community here at Pure Bouldering Gym. We have all realms of climbers and people that come to pure but what sets us apart from the others is that we all communicate with each other and climb together.

If cliques start we bash those and we strive for a fun and inviting environment for all. Over the last few years, we have started up month-long events called Community Bouldering League and people participate on teams for a full month to win fun prizes.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Building the family bigger and keeping the lights on is a perfect success for us!
