Inspiring Conversations with Caleb Gilmore of Suzie’s CBD Treats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Gilmore. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Caleb Gilmore is the co-founder and president of Suzie’s CBD Treats. 

Suzie’s began when Caleb met Richard Squire, the founder of Breckenridge Brewery while playing in a community sports league. Richard used CBD to ease off of prescription opioids after a back surgery and naturally started giving it to his senior dog Suzie after seeing the benefits. 

Ever the entrepreneur, Richard approached Caleb with the proposal to drop out of engineering school and go into business together to make CBD dog treats. 

Caleb immediately dropped everything to focus on starting Suzie’s and he hasn’t looked back since. 

What started in Richard’s kitchen has grown into a nationally recognized brand sold in almost 1,000 independent pet stores across the country. 

Unfortunately, Richard passed away to cancer in 2019 – but his legacy as well as Suzie’s lives on in our company and our mission, 

Richard knew how valuable Caleb was, and it is safe to say that we all agree. Caleb is wise beyond his years, innovative, intelligent, and an amazing pack leader! He lights up a room with his energy, smiles, and passion for animals no matter where he is. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenges have been losing Richard and navigating COVID only a few short months after. However, Caleb stepped up and followed Richard’s guidance to keep the business growing. Throughout COVID he ensured that not a single employee missed a paycheck and that Suzie’s remained strong!

Suzie’s CBD Treats makes USDA organic, full-spectrum CBD products for pets. Suzie’s mission is to provide accessible CBD products for pets in need and to donate products to rescue animals in all 50 states. 

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
One of the first risks taken was when Caleb joined the business. At the time, he was halfway through an Engineering degree. Richard assured him this opportunity was once in a lifetime and that college would always be there. Caleb, the son of two educators, took the risk and is so grateful that he did. 

Another risk is being in the CBD space at all. The CBD market, especially in Colorado has exploded in the last few years. This means Suzie’s must strive to make the best quality products and connections to stand out in an oversaturated market.
