Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Kochenberger.
Hi Casey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my journey in retail at the young age of 16, which sparked my passion for the industry. After graduating
from The University of Colorado with a degree in Communications, I managed a boutique, gaining valuable insights and experience. In 2004, I took a leap of faith and partnered with my mom, who had extensive boutique retail experience, to open our own women’s contemporary boutique, **BLUSH**, in Cherry Creek North.
After seven successful years, we were presented with an exciting opportunity to relocate to **Larimer Square**,
a vibrant hub bustling with tourists, new restaurants, and retail. We embraced this change and enjoyed a
wonderful nine years in that prime location until we lost our lease. This turning point led me to explore a new venture in staging houses. While staging for about a year, a realtor I closely collaborated with introduced me to a developer interested in Tennyson Street. She believed our boutique would thrive in this up-and-coming neighborhood. I took her advice, met with the developer, and within months, we re-opened our store in 2019 at the Stuart Street Shops.
Just as we found our footing, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. However, the unwavering support from our customers and the community helped us navigate those challenging times. Fast forward to 2024, we proudly celebrated our **20th anniversary** in business—remarkable, considering the 11-month hiatus we faced.
Alongside me through this journey was my mom, who recently retired after years of hard work and style that I’ll
always be grateful for. I live in the neighborhood where the store is located, and it has quickly become my
favorite location yet. The community continues to embrace us, and while retail will always come with its
challenges, our 20 years of experience reassures me that we can overcome them together.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While I thought my extensive experience in retail would easily translate into running a business, I quickly learned
that there’s a significant difference between the two. The journey has certainly had its challenges:
Understanding Business Operations: Initially, I believed that my background in retail had prepared me for
everything. However, I quickly realized that running a business involves a multitude of complexities, from
finances to marketing strategies.
Hard Lessons in Inventory Management: One of the most difficult aspects has been managing inventory
effectively. Early on, I made mistakes that taught me the importance of understanding customer demand and
supply chain dynamics.
Navigating Market Fluctuations: The market crash of 2008 was a tough hurdle. I think I learned the most about “what not to do” during this time. The business got in a lot of trouble financially during this time. I learned a lot of tough lessons.
Finding the Right Location: We’ve moved locations three times in search of a “better BLUSH.” Each move
brought excitement and potential, but it also required significant effort to establish ourselves and try new things which may or may have not worked out.
COVID-19 Challenges: The pandemic further complicated our journey, impacting foot traffic and customer
habits. However, the support from our community helped us navigate this tough period.
Balancing Work and Family: Managing the demands of running a business alongside being a wife and a mother
will always be something I think about and have to work through.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about BLUSH?
BLUSH is a contemporary women’s clothing boutique built on the idea of self-expression. We offer a carefully edited selection of contemporary and designer clothing and accessories, blending West Coast cool with East Coast chic. Our brands include Xirena, The Great, MOTHER denim, Pistola, Clare V., CLOSED, and so much more!
What truly sets BLUSH apart is the atmosphere. We think of the store as the women’s version of a neighborhood barbershop — a place where you can come to hang out, talk about life, enjoy a glass of wine, and of course, shop. Our team understands how to create looks that feel polished, effortless, and perfectly suited to the Colorado lifestyle, helping every client feel confident, put-together, and uniquely herself
How do you define success?
