Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Wood.
Hi Erica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I discovered dance at a young age as a powerful portal for emotional expression and creative release. It was a way to move through the angst and anxiety of growing up, transmuting stress into something creative.
I spent hours in the basement trying to emulate Janet Jackson’s “Pleasure Principle” video, back when MTV was actually music television, chair stunts and all.
In college, I began my formal dance training journey through competitive ballroom dance, training with Daniel McGee of TopHat Dance Studio in Philadelphia, performing nationally in dinner dance shows alongside the late Broadway choreographer Arte Phillips.
My path deepened through somatic exploration studies with Amara Pagano, founder of The Path of Azul. This was a shift to moving from the inside ⇾ out, rather than through choreography from the outside ⇾ in. Beginning in 2018, I started facilitating dance experiences for awakening love and embodied storytelling, leading workshops, retreats, and festivals around the world.
Beyond the studio, I bring nearly 20 years of experience in leadership development and organizational transformation. I served as Chief People Officer at a high-growth Insurtech in NYC, and have advised executive teams at over 200 multinational organizations spanning industries from healthcare and fintech to aerospace and entertainment.
I hold a Master’s in Organizational Psychology/HRD from Villanova and a Bachelor’s in Psychology & Business from Temple University, where my academic research focused on alexithymia and emotional processing. Alexithymia refers to a pattern where individuals have difficulty identifying and articulating their emotions. They may experience emotions physically or mentally, but lack the internal framework to label or express those feelings clearly. I later trained closely with neuroscientist Dr. Dan Radecki, founder of The Academy of Brain-Based Leadership. We explored the neuroscience behind effective leadership and the vital role of psychological safety.
Now, I’m fusing both worlds into one: Designing programs to elevate culture and develop leaders by incorporating the body.
I began integrating embodiment practices into leadership labs and business meetings in 2019 and continue to teach and evolve this work today. One of the projects included leading group facilitation sessions for U.S. nurses and healthcare leaders at the height of the pandemic, delivering tools to combat burnout and promote resilience amid unprecedented pressure.
I also partnered with 21 global leaders in the “Bright Future Now” program, guided by Dr. Robert Gilman, exploring sustainability, systems thinking, and conscious leadership—integrating ethical, humane business principles into innovation and cultural transformation.
I’ve worked across industries including aerospace, AI/ML, biopharmaceuticals, fintech, healthcare, insurtech, manufacturing, non-profit, SaaS/tech, and more. Whether advising startups seeking scalable growth or established multinational companies pursuing culture evolution, my mission is to cultivate people-first organizations that outperform sustainably.
My dream is to shape the future of work, where resilience, innovation, and humanity hold hands to drive extraordinary impact.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Bringing embodiment practices into leadership- and self-development presents an interesting and complex opportunity to deepen self-awareness, presence, and authentic connection.
Myriad challenges arise when attempting to embed somatic practices into traditional leadership , self-leadership, and confidence-building programs:
1. Some people are not accustomed to accessing or expressing bodily sensations and emotions, especially in professional settings. Embodiment asks for receptivity and vulnerability, which can feel risky. Self-trust and authentic confidence can make it more easeful.
2. Guiding participants to connect their embodied experiences/insights with concrete leadership behaviors, integrating them into their life. Clear frameworks, movement-based or somatic activities would ideally have workplace relevance, making it easier to integrate these insights into self-leadership and everyday decision-making. Frameworks + Embodiment = Deeper Learning (i.e., bridging the knowing – doing gap).
3. The delicate balance of structure with freedom ~ providing enough structure to guide growth and allowing enough freedom for personal expression. Too much rigidity can stifle their practice, too little structure can leave participants feeling lost or disconnected from the purpose.
4. Adapting to new environments ~ every venue is different and unique. Whether shifting from in-person to virtual delivery or integrating movement into unfamiliar spaces, there are practical challenges in maintaining the energy and depth of embodied work. These logistical hurdles can dilute the power of the experience unless addressed creatively.
Back in 2019 I found a beautiful studio in North NJ. Unfortunately, noise complaints from nearby businesses forced us to relocate. It was a clear reminder to carefully consider noise and music in any venue.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
EMW Consulting/”Embody Meaningful Work” is a leadership development practice grounded in the intelligence of the body. We guide individuals and teams to reconnect with their unique strengths, purpose, and presence so they can lead with clarity.
Using a distinctive blend of somatic practices, movement, the latest neuroscience/EI research, leadership coaching/development, and experiential learning, we help people move into deeper alignment. Leadership is about more than authority or job titles. It’s a lived experience that fosters flow and connection.
This work lives at the intersection of movement and purpose. It’s no surprise that a poll of Fortune 100 companies from Ohio State professor Angus Fletcher found that leading in a volatile environment is today’s most in-demand skill. Participants are able to tune into their internal signals and relational presence so they can powerfully engage with life.
“EMW-Leadership Labs” were created to prepare people for navigating change, whether as a seasoned leader, a new leadership role, or gearing up for a significant organizational shift. Our in-person and virtual programs are designed to cultivate self-trust and the skills needed to make a profound impact. Leadership capacity becomes fierce when it’s sourced from the inside ➝ out.
What makes this work the proverbial “purple cow” (hat-tip: Seth Godin) is its depth and honesty. Clients often arrive expecting traditional leadership training and leave with a renewed relationship to their power, body’s signals, and voice. This is not a surface-level experience. It’s about developing leadership that is embodied and sustainable.
At its core, this practice exists to reclaim leadership as a grounded presence over performance. In many professional environments, we’re conditioned to override our bodies and prioritize intellect over intuition.
I wish I could go back in time during my consulting days and flip leadership development on its head (no pun intended, breakdancing friends). The wisdom of the body should be woven into the architecture of any leadership development program or culture-change initiative. Not through the dreaded “death-by-the-facilitator-reading-PowerPoint-slides” style workshops, but through experiences that actively engage the body and the mind.
With outdated, rigid leadership models losing relevance, more people are seeking innovative, human-centered approaches. We offer a space to explore leadership through experimentation. This is where growth and innovation are born.
With decades of experience across consulting, executive leadership, entrepreneurship, and dance, I bring practical, embodied insight to leaders at every stage. Whether you’re just stepping into leadership or looking to reenergize your presence, you’ll gain actionable tools to lead with power and purpose. The complexities we need to navigate are only multiplying.
As Liz Gilbert says, “You’re not just a brain on a stick.” Because the way you move through the world is your unique signature, a dance only YOU can lead.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
As these dance programs permeate into the world, I’m excited to collaborate with others aligned with the vision of elevating leadership and empowerment work.
If you’re curious about the themes we explore, you can follow my Substack, where I share insights, practices, and reflections on embodiment and leadership.
There are many ways to collaborate:
You can co-host workshops, integrate movement into your existing wellness or artistic programs, or invite me to bring this work into your business, school, retreat, or community event. I’m also open to creative partnerships that combine dance with other mediums like storytelling or visual art.
This program is a unique blend of movement, leadership development, and embodied storytelling, with improvisation as a key thread. It’s a space where people explore their relationship with power, influence, voice, boundaries, visibility, and service.
If you’re looking to support the work in other ways, simply sharing it, attending events, offering space, or connecting me with aligned communities is deeply appreciated.
The Embodiment Program in Essence:
Want more collaboration and trust on your team?
Research says empathy.
Want less workplace conflict and burnout?
Research says empathy.
Want to better predict behavior and prevent miscommunication?
Research says empathy.
This program is:
~A reclamation of the inner leader
~A redefinition of leadership: less about authority, more about authenticity
~A movement-based pathway to transform how people show up, for themselves, for others, and for their communities
~A space to explore what it means to lead from embodied truth
Why This Is Needed (Now More Than Ever)
The world is starving for embodied leaders, people who lead from both IQ + EQ + BQ (Body Intelligence).
We’ve been trained to perform leadership. In their “Workforce 2024 Global Insights Report,” released in June 2024, Korn Ferry found that 71% of U.S. CEOs experience imposter syndrome, reflecting a significant confidence gap among senior leaders. Imagine how the rest of us feel, especially stepping into leadership roles with little to no training.
This work invites people back into themselves, their truth, and their wholeness so they can lead with competence and honesty.
Empathy is the #1 skill for trust, collaboration, and conflict resolution.
But empathy is most powerful as a mindset AND an embodied practice. It is a skill that can be honed.
This new dance program weaves together two of my core offerings: E.Motion Medicine™, which centers on personal transformation through embodied storytelling, and “Embody Meaningful Work,” which brings movement into the realm of leadership, purpose, and professional impact.
I’m always open to conversations with those who feel curious or inspired to collaborate.
