Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Chan.
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always knew I wanted to help people but the way was unclear to me. I thought I wanted to be in social work so I got a degree in sociology/writing. I quickly learned that I was taking home my work in the form of sadness. I knew no boundaries then and I couldn’t separate clients’ trauma and pain from my own. I was the heaviest I’d been and not my typical happy self so I took a chance and started practicing yoga in 2010. It took about a year to see the changes but I began feeling them immediately! In 2012, I had completed a 200-hour teacher training as well as a 60-hour hot yoga training and began sharing the practice. A decade later, needing more, I studied massage therapy! I was convinced that massage therapy would pair well with yoga and believe all the yoga experiences in my life helped me to become a great massage therapist.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Challenges and obstacles are a part of life. You can imagine there were many along the span of 13 years. I’ve seen several yoga studios close with little to no notice. The biggest challenge we can all relate to is 2020. I lost ALL my jobs; my massage therapy office had to close for a period of time and decided not to reopen in the same location/business model. My home yoga studio kept me online for 1 virtual yoga class a week (I use to teach 5/wk) but then closed the studio for good.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I opened my own massage practice in 2021. I specialize in client-centered integrative massage. I use a variety of therapeutic massage techniques ranging from myofascial release to deep pressure to trigger point therapy as well as energy, self-awareness, and breath to facilitate the most effective treatment to expand your healing & wellness!
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Why mindful? Why massage? Why Yoga?
These things and more have given me the tools to face this complicated extraordinary thing we get to experience, life!
