Inspiring Conversations with Jessica Austin of Mrs. Fancy Plants

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Austin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Mrs. Fancy Plants because of my love of plants! I am an entrepreneur and avid plant collector, so I thought I would marry the two and open a plant shop! I opened Mrs. Fancy Plants to share that love of plants with my local community. The goal in opening my shop was to be able to offer quality, curated houseplants and florals to my fellow plant lovers in the South Denver/Denver Tech Center at an affordable price.

There is a really rad plant shop circuit in Denver, but not much down South, so that was a big driver in opening my plant shop. Probably one of my favorite things about my job is researching and learning what the latest plant trends are and getting to share that with my customers. It brings me so much joy when excited customers send me emails or messages with pictures of the plants they’ve bought from me that are growing and thriving!

I have really enjoyed watching my business grow over the last year and a half, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Mrs. Fancy Plants!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I have definitely had my challenges along the way. Opening a business is hard work, and keeping up with everything as a one-woman show sometimes seems impossible! I run everything from marketing to web design, customer service, and inventory, so keeping track of all the details can be tedious.

Having my first summer in the retail space was also a challenge; I learned that retail slows substantially in the summer months, and you have to plan for that and budget accordingly. To me, the best way to look at challenges that come up in business is to think of them as opportunities to learn and then grow from them!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Mrs. Fancy Plants is a boutique plant shop that specializes in curated houseplants and florals. I also provide plant classes and workshops, consultation services that include styling, and installing plants in homes and businesses. In addition, I work with a number of photographers, providing plants and florals for styled photoshoots.

Other services include wedding and event florals and plant sitting. I am definitely known for my name, Mrs. Fancy Plants! I think that is also what sets me apart from the others; I can’t count how many compliments I have received about the name of my business! I want my customers to feel like they know me and can ask me anything and everything plant-related!

I always tell my customers, you can even ask me about plants that you didn’t get from me, we are all on this plant journey together, let’s watch each other grow!

What matters most to you? Why?
Kindness is what matters most to me these days. It has been a tough ride on this pandemic roller coaster, and I think we are all in need of kindness. That is one of the many reasons why I love the plant community so much; everyone radiates positivity and it’s really inspiring!
