Inspiring Conversations with Kavrena Mitchell of Purple Sugar Pastries

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kavrena Mitchell.

Hi Kavrena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved teaching and helping others grow, so when I was encouraged to further my teaching career, I decided to go to culinary school—and that’s where I discovered my true passion for cooking and baking. After graduating, I started making cakes of all kinds—from tiered wedding and 3D creations to traditional everyday-style desserts. I spent more than a decade honing my craft, teaching myself new techniques, and dreaming of one day opening my own bakery.

When COVID hit, everything shifted. Parties stopped, events were canceled, and suddenly no one needed big celebration cakes. But even during that time, people still wanted comfort—and there’s nothing more comforting than something homemade. That’s when I had the idea to bring the baking experience to people instead of just the finished cakes.

That idea became Purple Sugar Pastries—a brand built around the belief that anyone can bake something beautiful. I wanted to take the intimidation out of baking and replace it with fun, confidence, and creativity. Whether you’re a busy mom, a first-time baker, or someone who’s had a recipe flop, I want you to feel that same joy I felt when I started baking with my family—mixing, laughing, and making memories in the kitchen.

That connection between learning, creating, and building confidence is what drives everything I do. Purple Sugar Pastries is where my love for teaching, my culinary training, and my passion for empowering others all come together.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There have been plenty of bumps and detours along the way. When I first started Purple Sugar Pastries, I thought it would look completely different. I had spent years perfecting my cakes and imagined opening a bakery one day—but then COVID happened. Overnight, everything changed. Parties stopped, people weren’t celebrating like before, and all the plans I had for my cake business were put on hold.

At first, it was discouraging. I had worked so hard for so long, and suddenly it felt like I was starting from scratch. But that’s also when I started looking at baking in a new way. Instead of giving up, I asked myself, “How can I still share what I love with people who need a little sweetness right now?” That’s how the idea for the baking kits came to life.

Even with that new direction, it wasn’t easy. I had to learn everything—how to source ingredients, package products, design labels, and actually run a business. There were nights I second-guessed myself, wondering if anyone would even buy what I was creating. And now, with the uncertainty in the world—the economy, the cost of living, and the way so many people are still trying to build and rebuild their lives—it can feel challenging to keep moving forward as a small business.

But that’s exactly why I keep going. In times like these, people need comfort, connection, and something to smile about. Purple Sugar Pastries is my way of bringing a little joy back into people’s homes. Whether it’s through a baking kit, a printable tag, or our upcoming baking journal, my goal is to remind people that small moments of creativity and sweetness can still make life feel a little lighter—even when everything else feels uncertain.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Purple Sugar Pastries is all about empowering home bakers and helping people elevate their kitchen confidence. We specialize in gourmet baking kits that make the process approachable, fun, and rewarding—no professional experience needed! Each kit is thoughtfully curated with pre-measured ingredients, clear instructions, and a touch of creativity so bakers can enjoy the process as much as the final result.

As the brand has grown, we’ve expanded beyond baking kits to include digital printables—like cupcake toppers, treat tags, and labels—that help make homemade desserts look beautiful and polished. We’re also developing a digital and printable Baking Journal designed to help bakers track recipes, record notes, and celebrate their baking journey.

What truly sets Purple Sugar Pastries apart is our focus on approachability, quality, and empowerment. Baking can be intimidating, but we’re changing that narrative by giving people the tools—and the confidence—to create something they’re proud of. Our motto, “Elevating Kitchen Confidence,” isn’t just a tagline; it’s the heart of everything we do.

I’m most proud of the community we’re building. So many people tell me that our products helped them rediscover the joy of baking, or gave them the courage to try something new. That’s what it’s all about—helping people see that they can do this, that their creations matter, and that baking is more than a skill; it’s a way to connect, learn, and feel joy in your own kitchen.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is seeing people light up when they realize they can do something they didn’t think they could—especially in the kitchen. There’s this moment when someone pulls something beautiful out of the oven, and you can see their confidence shift. That feeling never gets old for me. It reminds me of why I started Purple Sugar Pastries in the first place—to help people believe in themselves through something as simple and joyful as baking.

Baking, for me, has always been about more than just desserts. It’s about connection—mixing ingredients while laughing with family, creating something from scratch, and watching it bring people together. Even now, when I’m developing a new baking kit or working on a printable design, I still get that same excitement I had as a kid sneaking tastes of cake batter in the kitchen.

What makes me happiest is knowing that something I created can spark that same joy for someone else. Whether it’s a family baking together on a Sunday afternoon or someone using our printables to dress up their homemade treats, it means the world to know I played a small part in that moment. That’s the heart of Purple Sugar Pastries—spreading confidence, creativity, and a little bit of sweetness wherever it’s needed.
