Inspiring Conversations with Kayti Fan of Kayti Fan Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayti Fan

Hi Kayti, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been an interior designer for over a decade, working at design firms in Washington, DC and Denver, CO. My foray into interiors began while learning and exploring the aesthetic and technical aspects of textile design. During this time, I developed a unique skill set to explore my passion for interior design. Prior to my design endeavors, I worked for non-creative industries in both the private and public sectors. While I felt accomplished and grateful for all of the skills I gained, I also felt a constant pull towards creative pursuits; a yearning I couldn’t shake. It was a nerve-wracking pivot, I’ll admit, but I took that leap of faith in 2012 and have never looked back!

I studied interior design at the Interior Design Institute and the New York Institute of Art and Design, and hold a Bachelor’s of Arts in International Studies and Music from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. I also hold an M.P.S in Creative Business Development from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the early days, I think my biggest obstacle was always myself. Even though I had the creative chops and I was incredibly motivated to succeed, I struggled with self-doubt and second-guessed my decision to do a complete 180. I decided to go back to school to develop new skillsets and help me unleash my creativity. I also sought jobs in the industry, and gained mentors who helped me navigate the professional world of interior design. I networked and built relationships with people who were immersed in the art and design world. All of these pursuits and experiences helped me boost my confidence and forge ahead whenever the self doubt crept in.

We’ve been impressed with Kayti Fan Designs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m currently the owner of Kayti Fan Designs, a residential interior design firm that serves the Denver metro area and Front Range communities here in Colorado. My interior design philosophy is largely built around helping clients express themselves in their living spaces. I listen to my clients needs and help them find their design identities in this fast-paced, social media driven society where we are constantly inundated by design tips, DIY videos, and the latest furniture trends.

Listening and open communication is incredibly important for any design project, and I’d say this a strong suit of mine. Coupled with an eye for detail, and thoughtful problem-solving, I’m always aiming to maximize functionality for each client’s unique lifestyle.

Aesthetically, I would describe my design style as both eclectic and contemporary. I don’t shy away from color and love when client’s are equally adventurous. While I do stay up to speed on the latest trends, I do not let them drive my work. Residential design is so intimate so I really let my clients inform my vision. I love the uniqueness of vintage finds, mixing design styles, and incorporating pieces that imprint my clients’ personality and taste into a space. It is such a privilege to be invited into people’s homes and given the freedom to create beauty every day.
