Inspiring Conversations with Kelly Mahana of Authentic Recovery Homes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Mahana

Hi Kelly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born into generational poverty in Southern California gangs and drugs were everywhere and I was no exception getting involved with the gang at 10 years old and catching my first felony at that age as well. I begin using drugs and alcohol and caught multiple felonies at the age of 12 which ended up with me being sent to Juvenile prison. Once released from Juvenile prison I fell completely into my addiction and eventually overdosing and catching another felony and being sentenced to adult prison as a teenager I did not stop my drug use as I overdosed again in a maximum security prison finally I was released August 29th 2019 to community corrections three months shy of my 32 birthday I had no goals dreams aspirations or work/ education experience in the world. I was in a halfway house that was treatment focused and I was scared to death but I began to get honest with myself. I told my self that I would open up a sober living home in order to help others who had struggled with substances the way I had. For three years & nine months I worked two full time jobs until I had saved enough money for my first home!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done
For our first three months in business we only had two people in our place and crazy overhead so I didn’t know how we were going to stay afloat and pay the bills
