Today we’d like to introduce you to Kent Youngblood.
Hi Kent, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Started out with the dream of being a sportscaster but realized I had a talent for things behind the camera… writing, producing, and directing. I’ve worked in almost every aspect of film and video that there is… news, sports, documentaries, reality television, feature films, television series, corporate video, and commercials. This journey around the industry exposed me to many different production methods and creative approaches. Plus, I had the opportunity to work with so many talented individuals, in front of and behind the camera. I had the chance to direct, shoot, location scout, and edit so many different types of work. I wouldn’t have wanted my career path to go any other way.
For the last ten years, I’ve focused on short-form video… commercials, network promos, and documentary shorts. I like the compact nature of these formats as it forces you to tell a compelling story simply and quickly. It also allows me to work on a wide range of projects over the course of the year.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The film and television industry is highly competitive. It’s tough to break out on your own and build a name for yourself. Over time, by producing a lot of quality work while developing relationships and networking, I was able to do it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’ve owned several production companies over the last 25 years, from Surfing Shakespeare and Verite Films to my current company, Movie Mogul Productions. At Movie Mogul, we focus on being storytellers. We tell stories that engage and inspire. Whether it’s video or photography, we turn ideas into content that people remember, use and want to share.
We love that every client is different, every job unique. That’s what motivates us. Whether you have a fully formed creative brief or a concept that needs to be developed, we guide clients through the creation process and help tell the story they want to share.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
There’s been so many mentors and supporters over the years but a couple stand out. My father was a writer and very creative. He always supported by drive to work in video/film, even though he knew it would be a challenge. I get my easy-going, balance approach to business from him. Dave Westin was a news videographer in the early days of my career and was responsible for teaching me the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the industry. We travelled the world together and dealt with every production challenge imaginable. Finally, Joel Pilger was the Founder/Creative Director of Impossible Pictures. He was instrumental in showing me how creative production companies work and how they deliver cutting-edge creative to their clients, day in and day out.
