Today we’d like to introduce you to Lane Fisch.
Hi Lane, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my tutoring journey in high school when my peers and their parents would reach out to me for math/physics help. I then went on to study astrophysics at CU Boulder, where I tutored in my later years and really found my passion for seeing that “light bulb” go off in student’s heads. I joined a few companies over the years and gradually built up my network through word of mouth while shifting my focus to the ACT/SAT.
Over the past 8 years, I’ve accumulated more than 6,000 hours of one-on-one experience in ACT, SAT, and math instruction. Through these years of refinement, I’ve developed explanations for test content and strategy that I genuinely believe are among the clearest and most straightforward in the world. I have an ability to quickly sense precisely what proficiency level a student is at and cater my explanations to that level, providing cut-and-dry explanations that simultaneously provide a comprehensive understanding of the given topic.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In the beginning, branching off to start my own business required incredible dedication and risk-taking. The process required an understanding that it would grant no instant gratification, but would instead be a long-term investment. I spent countless hours creating and refining my website, reaching out to those who might be interested in my services, and mapping out the game plan for the business.
At first, I only had 1-3 clients per month. However, I believe that the care I put into the customer service side of the business helped to increase that number. I hold myself to the highest standards of exceptional client communication: reaching out to accommodate new interested clients immediately and giving frequent, personalized phone call updates to the parents throughout the tutoring process. I’ve offered countless free phone consultations and free trial hours, knowing that many hours I spent building the business would not immediately pay off.
Now, at any given time I am working with about 20 weekly students per month, and my colleague, Jon, is currently working with about 15!
As you know, we’re big fans of ACT & SAT Mastery . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Over the past 8 years, I’ve accumulated more than 6,000 hours of one-on-one experience in primarily ACT/SAT prep.
I cover all sections of the ACT/SAT and love the occasional math student that needs help with their class!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I am extremely grateful about the circumstances regarding my business. At the end of the day, the business model required for tutoring is not as difficult to maintain as some other business models. For example, my aunt, Kelly Weaver, runs a photography business that requires a hefty investment each month with a much quicker provision of services, given the general nature of photography. Given the fact that students need to be comfortable with all sections of the ACT/SAT, it is generally required to meet weekly for 2-3 months before their test and throughout their entire testing timeline to maximize a student’s score.
Other businesses may also require more of an investment for advertising, but I am lucky to say I have only had to spent a small amount on advertising. Nearly all of my leads come via word of mouth from satisfied clients or random form submissions on my website.
