Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Sauer.
Lauren, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From high school, I was always fascinated by the power of nutritious food. I had a family member utilize optimized nutrition throughout her cancer journey which inspired me to pursue nutrition for my bachelor’s degree. I spent 4.5 years in my undergrad at Colorado State University in the accredited Food Science and Human Nutrition track before graduating and being accepted to my internship with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. I completed a 1200-hour supervised internship over eight months before passing my national board exam to get my credentials as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. I moved back to Colorado and got my first job as a clinical dietitian in a hospital system in Northern Colorado. After two years I was already burned out. I did not enjoy the work I was doing and I didn’t feel respected in my position. So, I decided to quit my clinical job and start my own nutrition counseling business as a side hustle in January of 2021. After my first year of dabbling in my business, I decided to take it to the next level. In January of 2022, I completely rebranded to The Plant-Based Remedy. I niched down on my messaging and who my target audience is, and I plan for it to become my full-time income by the end of the year. I have so much freedom to pursue my passions in nutrition now, which translates to the high-quality services I provide to my clients.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. The biggest struggle is having the skills to do it all. To be a small business in this day and age you have to learn content planning, social media skills, business funneling systems, nurture online relationships with prospective clients, and more. In my field, too, I have to worry about HIPAA-compliant platforms and be mindful of not providing medical nutrition therapy to anyone outside of Colorado since a lot of other states require different licensure to practice. The bare logistics of starting a business also feels so gate-keepy, like what to file and who to pay to become a legally operating business while also figuring out taxes and whatever else. I would have to say the one thing that is consistently hard is niching my messaging. The field of nutrition coaches, nutritionists, and dietitians feels so saturated so there’s a need to stand out and offer something different. I also operate via telehealth so I rely on social media to gain clients.
