Inspiring Conversations with Maddix Stovie of Simply Things By Maddix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddix Stovie.

Hi Maddix, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began Simply Things By Maddix in 2020 when I was in college and unable to secure an internship due to the pandemic. I began my business to gain marketing experience, spread joy, and inspire/motivate others. It went better than I expected and I have been able to run the business on the side ever since.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would say running a business is never a smooth road. There are so many different things that you have to take care of and make sure are done correctly. For the past two years, I have been trying to figure out exactly what I want my niche to be and how to grow a business. Some struggles I have come across since opening my shop are finding my community, figuring out pricing, and figuring out what type of products to sell.

Throughout the past two years, I have gained many supporters and individuals who make this dream a reality. I have also found that not everyone is supportive of my dreams, and that is okay. But this was an aspect of opening my shop that I did not see coming. This has been my biggest struggle so far, but I am finally starting to find who my community is. Who supports my dreams, whether it is purchasing or promoting.

Another struggle I have had to figure out is pricing. I feel that every business owner can relate, but trying to figure out the perfect price point is difficult. Charging the right amount for you to make income, yet trying to keep it at a reasonable price for consumers. I have finally figured it out, but it has taken a long time to get to this point.

The last struggle I have been figuring out is my niche. I am a boho fanatic. I love everything boho, plants, and neutral colors. I am working to incorporate that aesthetic into my shop but I have been working to find this niche for over 2 years, and that can come with lots of trial and error.

Right now, I have a handful of items that don’t fit that niche and are still on my website. Now, that I have figured out where I want to take my business and everything I want to sell, I have been working to sell all the inventory I currently have to make room for even more items that fit the aesthetic I want to have.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Simply Things By Maddix?
My business is boho inspired e-commerce-based shop and is in its 2nd year of being open. I sell tees, sweatshirts, stationery, tumblers, and more. All products have been created by me or are worked on by me. Whether it is working on designing stationery and stickers or pressing shirts personally to creating designs to be locally sourced.

I currently am working to sell out all my current inventory to make room for all things boho and plants with a neutral look aesthetic. I first opened my shop on Etsy and began running my business there. On my second anniversary, I launched my very own website www.simplythingsbymaddix.com through Shopify. I am known for my tees, sun catchers, and stationery.

Something that sets me apart from others is my shop is based on motivational sayings or things that I believe can bring people inspiration. When I first thought of opening my shop I was hesitant. What if it failed? My parents both immediately told me I should do it. They both inspired me to begin this journey of starting my business and have been by my side through every second of it.

I want to spread that inspiration and help people find joy and motivation/inspiration. I am most proud of what my brand stands for. Although I am in the middle of a little change, nothing brand-wise is changing. It is still based upon creating items that say or show inspiring ideas.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Determination. This has been my number one characteristic to get me to where I am today. It takes a lot to run a business while also working a full-time job. Balancing life, sleep, work, and being social has been difficult but I want to eventually run my business full-time, and being determined has helped me get this far and has been my focus since the beginning.
