Inspiring Conversations with Maximilian Knight of Rooted Robotics

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Maximilian Knight.

Hi Maximilian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I grew up in Brooklyn, NY in a bilingual household where we spoke German and English. Early on in my life, I learned about climate change and sustainability and the various ways that jeopardize life on our planet as we know it today.

I was privileged to be able to travel all over the world as a child and fell in love with the natural world as well as the nuances of different cultures and peoples.

From a young age, I always felt an itch to combat the ills I saw in the world. This led me to learn more about various social movements and study other ways of impacting society, which is how I was drawn to entrepreneurship. The famous Buckminster Fuller quote does a great job of summarizing the way I look at impact, “In order to change an existing paradigm you do not struggle to try and change the problematic model. You create a new model and make the old one obsolete.”

When I first learned of vertical farming, I was in high school and was blown away by the potential impact it could have on the sustainability of food production with regard to water and resource conservation, space efficiency, and the health impacts of local food on communities and the looming unknown impact of climate change on global food systems. I was hooked on the topic and was lucky enough to interview Dickson Despommier, who coined the term Vertical Farming, for a project in high school.

Later on, while studying engineering at CU Boulder, I continued to follow the space and watch as many high-profile companies raised hundreds of millions of dollars and eventually struggled and, in some cases, shut down. While watching this, my wheels started spinning, and after launching a product successfully on Kickstarter after college, I decided to refocus on the vertical farming sector and address the problems I was seeing in the industry.

Despite a healthy skepticism of many critics about the cost of electricity for LED lighting compared to “free” sunshine for most farms, I came to realize that labor is by far the most expensive part of most vertical farm operations is hampering their ability to either operate profitably or sell their produce at a price that competes with the existing agricultural industries. I later learned that in some operations it can be over 50% of operating costs.

This fundamentally was what got me into robotics and automation. I couldn’t stand by while this industry, with so much potential to improve the world, struggled with very solvable problems. These problems were not only solvable, but they have become much more affordable to tackle with the many advancements in machine learning, computer vision, advanced manufacturing, and robotics.

Keeping in mind that cost was the major issue at the heart of the industry’s pains, I focused on relentlessly designing systems to be modular, scalable, and, most importantly, affordable. Our mission at Rooted Robotics is to accelerate the adoption and advancement of controlled environment agriculture by providing affordable solutions to farms of any size.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to entrepreneurship is never smooth, and we’ve had plenty of bumps along the way. When we initially started the company we focused on designing our own farm that we would operate and scale up around the country. The many projects and robotic systems that we designed and built, strengthened our understanding and skill for product development.

Due to the high cost of much of the automation equipment on the market, we developed our own systems for each step in the growing process from seed to harvest. While doing this, we realized that there was a significant market gap for automation equipment for small and mid-sized farms that don’t have $50,000-$100,000 to spend on a single piece of equipment.

We recently decided to pivot to focus on machines and robotic systems that service that market as well as more highly connected systems for larger farms that reduce the labor between steps in a vertical farm’s production process (ie the transitions from a seeding machine to a transplanting machine, from a harvester to a tray cleaning machine and so on). This pivot has dramatically changed our design process because we’re now mostly developing for brownfields rather than green fields.

In our farm, because we designed it from the ground up, we had control over nearly every aspect, which allowed us to design the system to be automated, which is almost always easier than bringing in automation later. Our new design processes focus on simplicity, interoperability of our machines with existing machines, and making sure that if systems go down, they don’t dramatically bottleneck the whole farm’s operations.

Rooted Robotics is a cutting-edge technology company that specializes in providing innovative robotic automation solutions for controlled environment agriculture (CEA) farmers.
