Hi Mekedelawit Meberat (maki), so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
1 Maki Meberat [Licensed Esthetician and Certified laser specialist]

My Name is Mekedelawit Meberat. I go by Maki. Born and raised in Ethiopia, I moved to the USA in 2016. I graduated with a BA in marketing management back home, and after moving here, I went to college. I graduated in medical billing and coding, hoping to pursue something in the field. However, I wasn’t happy. In November 2022, I started exploring the beauty industry. I took aesthetician courses at Beauty Academy and quickly discovered my passion for helping people understand their skin, feel relaxed, and leave as better versions of themselves. A few months later, I enrolled in the laser program at Advance Laser College and fell in love with the laser industry. After that, I took two more courses: noninvasive body sculpting and teeth whitening. Finishing all these classes was difficult, as I worked overnight seven days a week. I am blessed to say I took a leap of faith. In January 2023, we opened our first beauty clinic. We named it M&S21 Beauty Clinic.

2 Sam Biruk [Licensed Esthetician}

My name is Samrawit Biruk; I go by Sam. I am originally from Ethiopia, and I moved to the United States 11 years ago with my family. I attended the Community College of Aurora and later transferred to Metropolitan State University of Denver. My full-time job is as a cardiovascular technologist at a university hospital. In addition to my academic pursuits, I developed a passion for makeup and skincare. I began doing makeup on friends and often helped others with home skin care remedies. All this led me to become a medical aesthetician, completing my training at Pickens Technical College and becoming a board-licensed aesthetician. I later took courses in noninvasive body sculpting and teeth whitening. Completing these classes with a full-time job was challenging, but I hoped for the best and opened our first business in January 2024. My best friend, who is more like a sister, and we opened our first beauty clinic, M&S21 Beauty Clinic. God willing, we are working on opening M&S 21 Beauty Clinic Number 2.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

No, It hasn’t been a smooth road; there have been several challenges along the way, including navigating periods of financial uncertainty, overcoming technical hurdles in developing new products and facing intense competition in the market. Being a new Business owner comes with a lot of ups and downs. Our biggest struggle was stepping out of our comfort zone, like going live on Instagram, TikTok, and social media consistency. As we know, social media plays a significant role in business success. We are still working on it because you cannot grow in your comfort zone.
