Inspiring Conversations with Molly McGrath of Hiring & Empowering Solutions

Today we’d like to introduce you to Molly McGrath.

Molly McGrath

Hi Molly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Many say my career found me rather than the other way around. In 1997, after moving from Buffalo, New York, to Denver, Colorado, I came across a job ad in a newspaper. That led me to apply for a position with the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys, which offers coaching, communication strategies, leadership development, and tech support, along with legal education for estate planning attorneys.

At 27, with no background in law, I was drawn to the job, intrigued by estate planning and elder law, which I had only thought of as something for the wealthy. Coaching was also new to me back in the mid-to-late nineties, and I hadn’t yet encountered communication methods or coaching techniques.

I started as an administrative assistant, leading the organization’s first communication and coaching program for attorneys. We focused on business operations, growth strategies, team building, and retention.

From the beginning of our work with attorneys in the coaching program, I fell in love with the profession. Estate planning and elder law attorneys, often compared to social workers with legal knowledge, impressed me with their deep compassion and empathy. Their genuine interest and dedication to their clients and staff really resonated with me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of the biggest struggles revolve around making time for my team—whether it’s a virtual assistant overseas or an in-house traditional W2 employee. Building and scaling a business requires a strong support team with skills that complement your own.

Before I had a COO, I found it challenging to allocate time in my calendar for my support team. They were getting the leftover scraps of my time, squeezing in between appointments, communicating with me via email or Slack channels, or meeting with me at the end of exhausting days. I realized they weren’t receiving the same attention and care that I would give to clients or sales meetings.

I wish I had prioritized this sooner, despite teaching about it. I used to assume that hiring great people was enough, but I’ve learned that continuous improvement is key. The biggest struggle lies in giving your team the proper time, attention, training, coaching, redirection, and onboarding. If you’re not tracking their activities and metrics, it’s going to be a long road.

As a leader, it’s crucial to carve out white space for yourself first—to work on high-revenue activities and to invest in your team. Often, they only see the stressed-out versions of us, leading to frustration and, in some cases, accepting mediocrity.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Since 1997, Hiring & Empowering Solutions has been the only team of management consultants offering hiring and training support to boutique law firms and “solopreneur” attorneys throughout the U.S. Our program is proven and highly effective, not just because we, too, are entrepreneurs, but because we were once key employees at law firms ourselves. We speak the language of law firm leaders as fluently as we speak the language of their employees, and we know how to get both groups of people to work together, seamlessly, for the benefit of the firm.

Our hiring and training programs help law firm leaders stop wishing that their team members would X, Y, or Z and start trusting and relying on them for consistent, measurable results.
