Hi Monica Nicole, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to the U.S. from Peru about 3 years ago, and everything felt new and different. I started baking alfajores because they remind me of home. It’s something I grew up with, and it always brings me comfort.
I shared them with a few people, and they loved them. Some even said it reminded them of their own memories.
Now I have a small business in Colorado, sharing alfajores and a little piece of Peru. It’s simple, but it means a lot to me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Moving to a new country was hard, especially being away from my family and starting from zero. At the beginning, even simple things felt difficult, and building a business here takes time. There were moments where I felt overwhelmed.
Having my husband by my side made a big difference. He supported me a lot during this process and helped me feel more grounded. Little by little, things started to come together, and I learned to trust the process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I run The Peruvian Cookie Company, a small business based in Colorado where I make traditional Peruvian alfajores.
I focus on keeping them simple, fresh, and very close to how we make them back home. For me, it’s not just about the cookie, it’s about the feeling. A lot of people find them really authentic. Some say it reminds them of home, and others just discover something new they really love.
What makes it special is that each alfajor carries a piece of my culture and my story. I’m proud of creating something that connects people, even if they’ve never tried something like this before.
Right now I sell at local markets, in a few specialty stores, and I also ship across the U.S. I love being able to share a little piece of Peru with people in different places.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy is feeling supported and connected to the people I love. My husband and my family, even from far away, are my biggest motivation.
I also feel happy in simple moments, like baking or seeing someone enjoy my alfajores. It reminds me why I started.
