Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Stewart.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a very proud third-generation nurse following in the footsteps of my maternal grandmother and my mother. I always knew I wanted to work in healthcare, but it wasn’t until nursing school that I discovered psychiatry was where I both wanted and needed to be. As a nurse, I worked in inpatient pediatric psychiatry until the pandemic, when I transitioned into general medicine to help support my community during a challenging time. After graduating with my doctorate from Arizona State University, I moved to Colorado with my partner where I spent some time working with a few different organizations, but none felt like quite the right fit. I wanted to create a space that reflected my values and approach to care. That’s what inspired me to open Stewart Psychiatry.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While it hasn’t been the smoothest road finding my way into creating my own private practice, I have been very fortunate to have a wonderful support system both in psychiatry and in my personal life. Through my experiences working with different organizations, I’ve learned so much about what truly works in patient care. I’ve taken those lessons and molded them into my own approach, striving to offer the best and most compassionate care possible. On the other hand, I’ve also seen what doesn’t work; experiences that have reinforced the importance of empathy, authenticity, and meeting each person exactly where they are in their journey.
One of my personal mantras since 2020 has been to “learn to lean into the chaos.” I’ve found that when I resist or try to ignore what the universe is trying to show me, I often end up taking one step forward and two steps back.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Stewart Psychiatry ?
I am the owner of Stewart Psychiatry, a small out patient private practice in Golden Colorado.
I have a special passion for women’s mental health, including supporting those experiencing postpartum depression (PPD), postpartum anxiety (PPA), and postpartum OCD. I also provide psychiatric medication management for individuals who are planning a pregnancy, currently pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding. In addition, I enjoy helping those navigating premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and other women’s health related mental health concerns.
I believe the time I spend with each person is what helps set me apart. I offer 90-minute intake sessions instead of the typical 60, so we can really talk through your questions, concerns, and goals. My goal is for you to feel fully informed and confident about your treatment not just told what to do. I also make sure every plan is truly individualized, because your care should reflect who you are, not a one-size-fits-all approach. I want every patient to feel seen, heard, and supported every step of the way.
Truthfully, what I’m most proud of is the feedback I receive from referring therapists. While this is a business, it’s also mental healthcare. A space where people often aren’t sharing what’s going on with friends, partners, or peers, so privacy is paramount. I don’t ask for Google reviews that could compromise patient confidentiality, which makes the feedback I receive from therapist peers even more meaningful. When a colleague tells me that our mutual patient had a positive experience, it reassures me that I’m not only doing my job well but truly making a difference in someone’s life.
I want readers to know that I have openings for new patients and I take most major insurances. If you want to know more you can visit my webpage StewartPsychiatry.com
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
As previously mentioned, my grandmother and mother are major mentors and advocates of my career choices, but my partner is one of my biggest supporters (and cheerleader- thank you, Rob!).
Rob and I first met in 2020, just before the shutdown. During the pandemic, we supported each other through the challenges of social isolation, keeping each other company and finding joy together even while being apart from our families. In 2022, Rob, our rescue dog Lola, and I made the move to Denver. He has been my biggest supporter every step of the way as I chased my dream of opening Stewart Psychiatry, and having him by my side has made the journey even more meaningful. Living in Colorado has given us the chance to explore the mountain towns, enjoy little weekend adventures, and take time to relax and have fun together.
