Inspiring Conversations with Stephanie Bublitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Bublitz.

Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The Fort Collins Food Co-op started in 1972 as a Buying Club. Over time it evolved into more of the retail setting it is today. This year we celebrate our 50th anniversary! We are proud to offer Fort Collins an alternative to corporate grocers while offering the best organic, local and natural foods in town. We are also known as Moutain Avenue Market so as to appeal to everyone.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nope. Over the years, we have struggled many of the same struggles as other locally owned businesses. In the last ten years, we have seen more corporate competition move into town. Most recently, getting through a pandemic that allowed us to remain open while losing all the lunchtime grab-and-go customers who made up 20% of our daily sales. In addition, in the last few years, we have seen an enormous amount of equipment failure, costing us tens of thousands of dollars.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fort Collins Food Cooperative (DBA Mountain Avenue Market)?
We are a Community Owned and Democratically run Grocery Store specializing in Local, Bulk and providing the best quality food we can find. The Co-op works with dozens and dozens of local businesses. Often, we are the first retail location for a new producer. Our Bulk selection is the best in town. Cleaning supplies, Body Care, Oils, Vinegars, Dry Goods, Herbs and Coffee are just a taste of what we offer. Save plastic waste and money by refilling your own container. While we may be smaller than other grocers, we pack our store full of the best organic, local and natural foods we can find. While we may not have as many options as our big box competitors, we do check everything for quality.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Co-ops all abide by the Seven Cooperative Principles. Principle #3 is Cooperation among Cooperatives. In addition, we work with some great Reps and businesses who offer great advice.
