Inspiring Conversations with Xandra Hawes of Soul Essence Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xandra Hawes.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Like most people that choose to work in the holistic health sector, my career path initially started as a self-healing journey. I had no idea where I would end up when I started it, but it’s been incredible to follow my interests and passions and interweave it into the professional healing work I now teach to others. As a kid, I struggled immensely with hyper-sensitivity and overwhelm and simultaneously felt very ashamed of it.

To make matters extra tricky, I had a very big spiritual awakening as a teenager, which brought in more uncertainty and fear of what I could sense and see. Luckily, I had a very open-minded and creative mother that brought me to both a psychotherapist and a psychic-medium to help me make a better map of what was happening. Fast forward 20 years later, I now wear the same two hats professionally and love helping sensitive and empathic spiritual seekers find stability in their mental health and joy in their spiritual connection to themselves and beyond. I’m an LPC (licensed professional counselor) and a Licensed Minister, and I have an office in Boulder where I see psychotherapy clients, spiritual coaching clients and do psychic readings. I also have an online energy healing school where I teach groups of people how to tap into their self-healing and psychic abilities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh boy. It’s been more of a river with rapids than a road. Alas, once I learned it’s impossible to control things, the trail has begun to smooth out substantially. Some of my major struggles have been self-doubt and self-trust, which I eventually realized naturally arise when you are doing deeper healing work. Many people wonder how I’m in my 30s doing this work, especially as a psychic-medium. The straight answer is – lots of trial and error and continuously letting go of the fear of failure. I carried a deep fear of my own power based on some very disempowering experiences with spirits as I kid, but I learned that I can either wear those experiences like a scarlet letter and feel held back by them or view them as a learning experience and grist for the mill.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Soul Essence Center is comprised of my psychotherapy practice and psychic-medium services. Across the board, I specialize in working with sensitive, empathic and intuitive people that are either focused on strengthening their mental health and/or connecting with their spiritual healing and psychic abilities. My approach is unique because I interweave the worlds of psychology, spirituality and energy healing in a very holistic, grounded and trauma-informed way.

Because I hold both a spiritual and science perspective, I feel that It’s really important that someone’s mental health is stabilized and strong before opening up to bigger spiritual abilities. For example, I would recommend someone struggling with high levels of anxiety learn specific grounding tools first before opening up to bigger spiritual energies. This is because anxiety can often be equated with not feeling safe in the body, and intuition often comes from the body. Therefore, intuitive information can be hard to read or trust if anxiety is too high and it can turn into mental spiraling or even panic attacks.

When I started this work, I had very little financial resources, so I strive to provide lots of free content outside of the 1-1 work and group work I offer. I have a free podcast and blog where I focus on emotions and spirituality, as well as free guided meditations and even a free quiz to help you see if you have psychic abilities and how to nurture them.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Oof. I love traveling, and my mother worked for the airlines, so we were always going on mini-trips as a kid. I would say my favorite trip was going to New York City for the first time when I was 12 (I’m from Minnesota, so it was a MAJOR change in scenery). I was obsessed with the dirty-water hot dogs, the subway, and Madam Tussad’s Wax Museum. We took a night-time carriage ride in central park, and it down-poured. I didn’t care one bit. I’ve always had an adventurous spirit. My curiosity and desire for play have carried me far.
