Jacob, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity, always. Authenticity is key to living in the present, which is, in itself, key to getting the most out of this life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jacob T. Simons. I am a musician and songwriter from Grand Rapids, Michigan, now based in Louisville, Colorado. Most recently, I served as the de facto leader of the folk-rock collective Moon Orchids, who released an eponymous LP in February. In the interim between projects, I am ostensibly operating as a solo artist. I have written a substantial amount of new material since I’ve relocated to Colorado, a great deal of which I have recorded and plan to release under my given name in the near future.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Grandma Gwen, who has always treated me as a peer regardless of the five-decade-plus age difference between us.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Many times. With the current digital/streaming-centered infrastructure, it can be very demotivating to release music to what seems like a gaping void of an audience. With all the time, money, and energy that goes into making a record—not to mention the ultra-competitive talent pool—it can be discouraging when the reception doesn’t live up to expectations. However, the people who are into it are some of the kindest, most supportive folks you could imagine, and at the end of the day, I do this for myself.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Education in the arts is both a right and a privilege. It helps to build empathy and critical thinking skills and fosters curiosity about the world, all of which are necessary for a truly progressive and open-minded society.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes. As I’ve said previously, I do this for myself first and foremost.
