Katie Spencer shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Katie, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I recently experienced the stress of waiting in an online queue for Paul McCartney tickets. After much anticipation, I purchased three tickets to see my all-time favorite musician with my good friend and boyfriend. I have been listening to Paul and The Beatles nonstop ever since. October 11th can’t come soon enough!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! My name is Katie Spencer, and I am the owner of Katie Creative, a video production company. My background is a unique one in video production and gives me an edge over traditional video producers. After growing up in a video production household, I went to Colorado State University and got my degree in Journalism. I went from being a television news reporter to the world of public relations, and then Katie Creative was born. With the skillsets I learned in these different roles, I not only help my clients create video content, but also help them strategize the best way to get this new tool in front of their audience.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a kid, I thought of myself as very introverted. I was the quiet, well-behaved kid in class that didn’t come out of my shell unless I was around people I trusted. In college, I had the opportunity to study abroad and move to Italy for a semester. I really believe that catapulted me into a space where I had to come out of my shell to thrive. After that, there was another push as I went into the world of journalism and had to knock on strangers’ doors, possibly on one of the worst days of their lives, and ask to put them on camera. All of these uncomfortable situations led me to be open to talking to just about anyone and having the confidence to stand on my own.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could tell my younger self one thing, it would be that things work out. It may not be the way you expect them to, but I will be fine. I have had so many expectations in my life that haven’t panned out the way I thought they might, but I am so proud of where I am today.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I like to believe the public version of me is 95% of the real me. If you ask anyone I have worked with, I am the positive, bubbly, smiling, loud one. And I am that person, but it’s important to understand that everyone has their struggles and has bad days and gets frustrated. I love making a positive impact on someone’s day and will more often than not offer you a smile.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I only had 10 years left, I would stop holding back. I would buy the airline tickets to the place I’ve always wanted to go. I would eat the extra scoop of ice cream. I would (try to) stop sweating the small stuff. And more than anything make sure everyone I love know how much they mean to me.
