Laura Medicus shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Laura, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
With coffee in hand, I check work emails and respond, take a peek at the news and do a little bit of creative writing. I try not to get sucked into anything negative with the news first thing in the morning but sometimes that’s hard. After my coffee, the dog and I go for our morning walk at the park. We go out in rain, sun, snow or sleet and even if it’s nasty out, I feel better once I’ve done this. After that my work day starts right up with phone calls, desk time and meetings.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an Interior Designer who specializes in older homes. I run a small company in Denver, Colorado and we mainly work on older home remodels. Older homes in Denver are typically early 1900’s and up and we tend to work on full home remodels, pop-tops and additions where the family moves out of the home and the project takes about a year or more. I try to balance listening to what the clients wants and needs with what the the style of the home wants and needs.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I read Edith Eger’s “The Choice: Embrace the Possible “and it changed how I view everything. It’s a book that shows you that you have power over one thing in life, and that is how you choose to respond to events that are out of your control. The trauma that she endured during the Holocaust and the realization that she came to is profound.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Lean into the way that you’re different and don’t be shy about it.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
Settle for less and enjoy it more. I’m not talking about poor quality or craftsmanship, I’m talking about things.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes. I wanted to be published when I first started. For me, external validation is nice but it’s fleeting. That feeling doesn’t last and I’ve learned that it’s not important to who I am as a person. External validation doesn’t help you love yourself any more than you already do.
