Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Bella Johancen-Walt & Dayne Macdonald & Tyler Rohm & Thomas Decker of Denver Metro Area

We recently had the chance to connect with Bella Johancen-Walt & Dayne Macdonald & Tyler Rohm & Thomas Decker and have shared our conversation below.

Bella & Dayne & Tyler & Thomas , so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Well, as a band we can sometimes get pretty sidetracked by how excited we are about certain things. This can include a cool lick that one of us plays, us discussing music gear, or even just discussing music we love. We do, however, refocus. We have a mission, to share our sound and our stories to the masses. The mission is what keeps us going on this wild rollercoaster of being a band.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Painted Goya is an experience comprising of an amalgamation of different genres coming together. We bring elements of jazz, metal, rock, and everything in between to bring forth a sound unique to us. The keyword here is “experience.” How we present ourselves online and at our shows is very important to us.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Well, as a band, we have been heavy and positively impacted by the local Colorado music scene. It is so inspiring to see new bands pop up with their own unique perspective on the world and music. Colorado is especially a state that is not afraid to experiment with different genres, and we’d like to think that seeing this genreless revolution in music has inspired us to curate a sound that is all our own.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
Yes. We opened for A Killer’s Confession at Sunshine Studios and they, as well as the bands they were touring with, really dug our performance. It was beyond amazing to hear that these bigger touring bands loved what we are doing. It definitely drives us forward whenever the going gets tough as a band.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. One of the points of our music is that it’s us, and will always be what we want to write as a band. Tommy, our drummer, brings his jazz influences into the band, Bella brings her indie rock influences, and Dayne and Ty bring on the heavy metal. Yes, those are three very different genres but it’s authentically and unapologetically us. We know what we want to sound like and we are overcome with joy when
audiences respond well to the experience we are trying to curate.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
When we are on stage performing. When the four of us get on that stage, nothing else matters. We are there to play like it’s our last time to do so. We are there to put on a show, and a damn good one at that.
