Big M@K shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Big , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’d like to say I’m walking the path, sometimes I find myself wandering, but I’ll never stray too far away. What that means to me is simply I’ll never know everything there is to know that’s why we have the ability as humans to learn, without us being open to learning new things, we’d fail consistently without lesson, and try the same things over and over again with no avail. I’ve come to be at peace with any decision I make good or bad because there’s ALWAYS a lesson to poke its way into the light.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Big M@k. A rapper from Colorado Springs, CO. I was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1999. At age 2, he moved to Colorado Springs. I was no stranger to music, writing music since I was 9 years old, I hit my first studio with Lethal Productions in 2009. Although I am no longer with the company, I have grown to start my career in music INDEPENDENTLY, and I’m currently signed to Stevie Stone’s Ahdasee Records. Since 2018 I have opened for big names such as: ¡MAYDAY!, King Iso, Twisted Insane , Black Pegasus, Stevie Stone, Joey Cool, Chris Webby, Rittz, Krizz Kaliko, Hopsin, Merkules, Snow Tha Product, Tech N9ne AND MANY MORE. Recently, Big M@k, has landed successful features with Black Pegasus, King Kash, Stevie Stone, Krizz Kaliko & MORE.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
The biggest thing that I was taught to believe as a child that I don’t anymore, is that “you can’t make it out the hood”
I’ve seen many try, and fail but the main thing that helped me break that belief what just making the jump, and taking myself out of these situations I put myself in front of. Turning my back on situations that test my pride and my future rather than proving my pride and losing my future. The thing that people today don’t understand is that life is what you make it, what YOU make it, not anyone else or the situation in front of you, that decision is what’s going to make your future. Don’t let pride be the reason you lose everything you worked so hard to build, that’s what they want, and I know god has me on the right track doing the right thing no matter what he puts me through now
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
More recently than not I face that burden of wanting to drop it all, give up and act like nothing ever happened, but I believe I’m past that now. I believe I’m here to spread this message of hope, that’s you can make it out too. We don’t have to keep going through the same things and struggle trying to make it out. There is a way out, and that’s doing what you love, I’ve been blessed to be able to make my music my career and it doesn’t matter what it is that you want to do, you’ll miss 100% of all the shots you don’t take. So don’t be Dennis Johnson at the 3pt line now!
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes this is me, I’ve never hidden ANYTHING from my fans, some might even say I’ve gotten a little too personal with some, but at the end of the day I keep it a buck fifty with everything I say, and everything I’ve ever put in a song is a representation or a hood bedtime story if you will. People are blinded to the fact that there’s poverty everywhere and people will relate because these stories are true. That’s one thing I’ve always prided myself in, is that I’ve never had to pretend to be someone I’ve never been.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I think that most people will misunderstand the fact that because I tell these stories and I come from the lower poverty family, and I have the family and friends that are active, but it doesn’t mean that I’m glorifying the situation at all, I’m raising awareness. I don’t do the glory or the war storying, but what I do do, is spit facts, and that’s what’s factually coming from our neck of the woods. I represent the story that the medias won’t cover.
