Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with CJ Ballin of Lakewood

CJ Ballin shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

CJ , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Previously, I have not been so vocal about my faith in my music. In an industry that is primarily disconnected from faith, I have found myself unable to promote the things I believe in, such as God, a focus on family, and a love for country. I have devoted myself now to helping others know Christ through my music.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have loved music since I was a kid, but when my Dad passed away, I finally said I might as well try to do something. I would say my music is a culmination of my life experiences, and recently is now more focused on Christ and Christian values. Recently, I have realized that my music needs to be more than just rap and what the culture is these days, because in all honesty, I don’t want to fit in if it’s not going to glorify God.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Recently, Charlie Kirk’s death has affected me in ways I cannot explain. It has woken me up to how much impact I am making with my life, and reflecting, I need to do more.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering teaches you that life is a roller coaster and change is a fundamental of life. My suffering has taught me how to deal with my feelings, given me expressions like music, and made me reflect on the life that I was living before the suffering.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I feel like, through my music career, it has not always been the best interpretation of me. I am trying to incorporate more things into my music about real-life topics.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What light inside you have you been dimming?
Recently, I have been trying to dim the negativity and incessant social media noise that does not stop. Having some time not on screens, where you can go outside and enjoy others’ presence.
