Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with DR Craig Maples of Castle Rock

DR Craig Maples shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Craig, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I start my day by making coffee for myself and my wife, then I read for a bit and get a workout in. I wake up our kids and am able to spend some time with them while they are getting ready for school. We have four kids, so my wife takes 2 of them to their middle school and I walk our elementary kids to theirs. I then get ready for work and review patient charts at home if there is time. I like to be able to get all of this done so that I start the day feeling refreshed and ready to go, and have spent time with my family already.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Craig Maples and I am a physician that cares deeply about people in pain. During med-school I came across this specialty that is able to help those in chronic and acute pain without drugs or surgery. I primarily use Osteopathic Manipulation which is a gentle way to use my physician’s understanding of the anatomy to put things back in the right place so they can work properly and therefore not hurt.

I love that our clinic, Still Point Osteopathic Care, allows us to spend a good deal of time with our patients and offer truly personalized and individualized care in a comfortable environment that doesn’t feel like a doctors office. Although the philosophy of what we do at Still Point fits well in Colorado, there are very few physicians doing it – and even less board-certified in it as a specialty.

Outside of the office, I love spending time with my wife and our four boys going hiking, playing board games and watching F1. My wife and I also specialize in after-school activity logistics.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad taught us to find work that is meaningful and helps others. He taught us to find the balance of working very hard to be excellent at what you do while still spending time with family and on the things that are most important in life.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
No, but doing medical school with 4 boys was definitely difficult to say the least. There were times that I had to know that the future we would be building for them was worth it even though the present was difficult and exhausting. From grueling studies to audition rotations where I was gone for months at a time – we had to look at it as prep for the future.

In a similar way, there’s been times that starting a private practice has been very difficult. Fortunately, we are starting to see all of that pay off because of the care I am able to provide to my patients.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Raising our boys. My wife and I have worked really hard over the medical journey to provide a home for them where they have fun, feel loved by both parents and where they can grow confidently into who they are meant to be. We want to pour into them while we can and are willing to do things that may seem like sacrifices to the outside world to prioritize them and our family.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
I am a morning person and when I was younger I used to use that to start working immediately. As I have gotten older I have realized the morning is the part of the day that I enjoy most and have since prioritized my mornings over my evenings so I have time to read and reflect in the morning and spend time with my boys and my wife. In doing that, I have been able to prioritize the moments that will shape me and my family.
