Hi Luke, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
A lot of people walk in expecting a spooky, “Halloween-all-year” vibe, but that’s a pretty big misconception. The Golden Curiosity Shop is really more like a mini nature and science museum—full of fascinating fossils, meteorites, preserved specimens, and scientific curiosities. Sure, some of our items might look a little strange at first glance, but everything has a story and a scientific purpose. Our goal is to spark wonder and curiosity, not scare anyone—though a few raised eyebrows are part of the fun!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Luke Maas, the owner of the Golden Curiosity Shop here in Golden, Colorado. I’ve always been fascinated by the natural world, from fossils and meteorites to preserved specimens and vintage scientific instruments, and my shop is a place to share that passion. Think of it as a mini nature and science museum—you’ll find curiosities that spark wonder and invite questions, whether you’re a lifelong collector or just curious about the world around you. What makes us unique is our focus on ethical sourcing, education, and hands-on discovery. We also take our curiosities on the road—just last week I visited Mitchell Elementary. I spent the evening electrocuting little kids with my Van de Graaff generator. The kids got a real kick out of seeing their hair shoot straight up while over 400,000 volts of electricity coursed safely through their bodies. Experiences like this help get kids excited about STEM and show them that science can be fun and unforgettable.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that reshaped my view of the world happened in college, in the last chapter of a physics book on relativity. For the first time, it all clicked, and my brain basically exploded. I realized there’s a universe far stranger than our senses let on, and science is the lens that reveals it. The mind-bender that really got me was time dilation. If you could get in a spaceship and zip around the galaxy at near the speed of light, time would literally slow down for you—you would come back to Earth younger than your friends! It was thrilling, weird, and a little magical all at once—That’s exactly the kind of wonder I try to share every day at the Golden Curiosity Shop.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has a way of teaching lessons that success can’t. It’s in the moments of struggle—when things don’t go as planned, when obstacles pile up, or when a project feels impossible—that perseverance truly reveals itself. Those experiences taught me to keep going even when it’s hard, to problem-solve creatively, and to stay committed to my goals even without immediate rewards. Success is rewarding, but it’s the challenges along the way that build resilience and shape the kind of determination that keeps a business—and a person—moving forward.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Curiosity is the value I protect above all else. It drives learning, discovery, and creativity, and it’s the spark behind everything I do at the Golden Curiosity Shop. I believe that asking questions, exploring the unknown, and embracing wonder shouldn’t just be encouraged—they should be celebrated. Protecting curiosity means creating spaces, experiences, and conversations where people of all ages feel safe to wonder, experiment, and sometimes even fail, because that’s where real discovery happens.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. Giving your best has its own intrinsic reward. Even if you fail. Even if no one notices or applauds. The act of pushing yourself, trying something new, and striving to reach new levels is its own form of success. That effort builds growth, resilience, and self-respect—rewards no one can take away, and that often matter more than any external recognition.
